After removing the outer chain ring to install a bash guard should you remove a few links from the chain?

If you are sure you don't want to reinstall your big ring again, then yes, it will help your shifting performance and reduce chain slap.

Shift up onto the biggest cog on the cassette and the biggest ring (now middle) up front, shorten your chain so that this combination is possible.

If you have rear suspension also consider that most frames "eat" a bit of chain going through their travel (chain growth) and that should also be taken into consideration so you don't shorten your chain too much.

To mimic chain growth, take your shock out and measure the point where the shock would be bottomed via the i2i - say you have a 9.5" x 3" shock, 'compress' the bike in the stand without a shock so the holes where the shock would mount are 6.5" apart and then check to make sure you have enough chain at that point to not rip off the derailleur.

This all assumes you have rear suspension of course! :D
