Replacement breaks...

I am planning on replacing the breaks (front and rear) on my RM7. I have Hayes HFX-9's at the moment, which coincidentally decided to crap-out on me while I was on vacation.

Anyway, I am looking at the Avid Juicy 7 DH (203mm rotors) and Hayes HFX Mag HD.

Which would you choose? Are there any others (besides Shimano) for under $500 (for the set)?

Thanks,

Johnny

I've never tried the Juicys so I am going to leave that for the next post whore. :D I am a Hayes fan because it is real easy to pick up parts, it is cheap to maintain, and is reliable (for me at least). I bleed them at the end of every season and replace the pads whenever they are worn out.

However, I've had buddies who run HFX-9s (XC version, not MAG) and they've had some trouble with them on long downhill runs. The trouble surfaces when the brakes get real hot (hot HFX brakes = trouble).

i guess i am a post whore now but here it goes:

i rode a set of juicies on a vp about a week ago, and they worked awsome, plus you can sdjust where in the travel of the lever the pads will come into contact with the rotor. in short, they kick ass

Buy Mag levers for your HFX-9s. If you set them up properly, you'll have a bulletproof set of brakes, same as the stock Mags. Invest the rest of the money you save in a dictionary.

Did you know that longer rear hoses are NOT availible?
how about aftermarket ones? Unless you are installing them on a tandem, why would the ones supplied with the brakes not long enough? How about other small parts?

I have experience with both. My DH bike I use Hayes MAG (the older calipers), and on my trail bike i have juicy's. Its a hard call to say what set are better for me. Both have their good and bad points....right now im leaning to the Avids...

Hayes:
Good: Great power (when maintained proper), easy to fix/bleed, easy to get parts for, lots of replacement lever options.
Bad: Levers bend easy, Lever blade screws back out (loctite a must), Levers bushings wear too fast, Power can be too on/off for some people.

Avids:
Good: Easy to setup, More adjustable (lever throw, pad contact point), Bleed supposed to be easy (instructions a bit intimidating becuase they are so detailed), Much more modulation than hayes....
Bad: If you dont like the lever feel there arent replacement options. Hose on caplier is a permanent crimp... (i kinked mine by the caliper, so i might have to replace whole line)

Avid spare parts are on backorder all over the place. I believe Incubus has been going through hell with his Juicy's.

I'm wth MikeD on this one: buy Mag levers and a dictionary.

Might I ask why you are averse to shimano?

And you can get a new set of HFX-mags for under $500

I'd prefer something other than Shimano. That's all. And, Thanks, I knew that I could get HFX-Mags for $500. I was asking is there anything else out there for that price.

Yessir I am. the compression nut broke off in the master cyclinder in an effort to stop the leaking at the hose/lever. Oddly enough, the lever body is the only part not available as a replacement. Though the hose barbs and compression olives aren't very readily available. A shop sent the lever body out to Avid, but they want the rest of the parts.

I read through the thread and was thinking "why a dictionary", then I remembered the title. Pet peeve of mine as well... They're|thier|there and two|too|to irk me the most though.

Hmmm...interesting idea. The problem I am having now is from the levers. There is no modulation left in them.

Btw, that's funny stuff "Invest the rest of the money you save in a dictionary". :eviltongu

So, I don't know how to spell, and Word spell-checker suggested something completely different from what I intended and I didn't bother to re-check. It's a disability man. Why must you poke fun!? :nope:

The Mag levers solve all of the crappy HFX-9 deficiencies, and it's pretty cheap to pick up the levers. I think go-ride.com usually has them in stock, too.

Do you have dyslexia? I have a mildly dyslexic friend who can't spell for sh1t. But that's just what we do around here.

No, keep drinking. Then mail those Hopes to me. Actually, don't bother...I've gone back to Hayes.

I don't use CDs anymore. I just sing Pixies songs very loudly in my car. I saw the pixies over the summer, by the way...got the bootleg CD of that very show, in fact. It's pretty cool.

-No, thats Cliff Burton, former bad ass in Metallica before they sucked.
I can play the bass pretty well, but choose not to;)
-no band right now, just jam on the guitar when I have a chance
-no mullet, but that may change. A mullet would go good with my natural white trash facial hair:p
