I don't understand the rule. If your lap comes in under 12:00, just send out another rider. Unless there is a time restriction on when you can send out your last rider, like 11:00 maybe???
If you come in before 12noon (for most 24's) you HAVE to send another rider out according to the rules. But like splat said if nobody wants to go out again all you have to do is not check in when that last rider get through with his/her lap. Stop drink a beer then when 12noon hits check in. Some have a little grace period and you can offically finish an hour before 12noon.
Some of our 12 hour races down here have done away with the rule all together.
I got bumped up a spot at whistler because some dude didnt understand the rule. That sucks for him because he did WAY more laps than me. If ever face to face with him i could never claim to have beat him (although i did follow the rules and he did not) but with my family "i totally beat that dude down, i beat him so bad he quit :)"

Remember how at Dalton , when Instigator stopped at the end of his last lap and drank a beer so he would get in after 12 noon.
I think THAT should be the rule. You should be required to stop and drink a beer prior to finishing! :D

usually there is a large group of riders (on non-contention teams) sitting around a few hundred yards from the finish line, waiting for noon to arrive.

I like the Adrenaline rule where you can stop after 23 hours without DNFing so you don't have to wait around to finish or DNF because you had to abort a lap you started a few minutes before the end.

I don't understand why so many teams got a DNF. One team had 14 laps and DNF'd. What's the deal?

http://www.epicrides.com/results2005/5 Person Coed 150-199 Combined Age.html
The conditions were nasty enough that you were lucky to have a bike that still worked after doing a few laps. It was the only time I thought a fully rigid fixed gear bike was a good idea. Everyone seemed to have one problem or another and neither east or west coast team would have been ablt to finish without "demoing" fresh bikes from Cannondale.

so what were the Cannondale Demo bikes? Any new prototypes? ;)

Scalpels and Prophets. Douglas and T-Dog rode Scalpels and West Coast Kevin rode both a Scalpel and a Prophet.

What were some of the equipment difficulties people experienced? I read on mtbr.com where there was a hail storm - is this accurate??? Anyone get caught out in that storm?

Echo and Ghostrider got caught out in one hell of a storm about 1:00AM. Dry washes became raging torents and the climbs became waterfalls. Everyone was worried about them but they seemed to enjoy it.

The bike problems as I remember it consisted of Kevin having a tire fall off of his rim while going to the staging tent. Douglas lost his rear brakes on his first lap, GeeSpot needed a shifter cable replaced after her first lap, T-dog lost his rear brake after his third lap. My derailleur pullies seized up after my second and my shifter cable seized up on my third. On my last lap the only way I could shift was by twisting on the shifter with my left hand and yanking on the cable with my right, I ended up just riding it as a single speed most of the time.

Better late than never, this is a repost from another thread:

Just a quick recap until somebody with more time can fill in the details. The East Coast beat the West Coast and took 5th overall, with the West Coast in 6th. Congrats to them - it was an epic race in insane conditions. Everybody put out and we were within three minutes (with the West Coast leading) at midnight before some bad luck and brain farts cost the West some time. The East Coast traveled a long way and it was awesome to see them get recognized on the podium and they took home plaques and some gear, as well as the Ridemonkey Cup. It was an adventure all the way. There were some real dogfights out there, with Echo and I going head-to-head for half a lap early on.

The lap times are as follows - the posted results has the West Coast team all mixed up:
Rider Lap Time
Westy 1 1:01:08
T-Dog 1 1:02:17

Yep, I raced Canaan in 97,98 and 99. The course was completely insane. The downhill from the top of the mountain was pretty much straight down the mountain to the finish and it was rock gardens, mud and STEEP!

Those were the days

i did the '95 race, when torrential downpouts caused the whole course turned into unrideable peanut butter. the psychic scars run deep.

My next-door neighbor did the '95 race as well. One of his favorite "war stories" to tell.

The east coasters are travelling today. Hopefully they'll spice up the thread with more pics and stories. Meanwhile, contemplate this:

Fastest overall lap:
Robert Martinez 00:40:44.7500000

Damn, that's fast.

That is about a 22 miles an hour average, I don't think I could have done that on a road bike on a smooth surface with a tailwind and a paceline dragging me along.

Dude must have cut the course. If not, I'm selling my bike and buying a big screen TV.

We had to send a rider out before 12pm or DNF and the last rider had to finish by 1:30pm. I was going to do 2 in a row but hunger took over so I went back to camp, ate a tastey b-fast burrito then did another lap. And yes, there was beer flowing about 1/4 mile from the finish (flowing into my face, all over me and happily some made it into my mouth).

Thanks :D I was SO psyched for this race and after doing the sunrise lap (one without rain and actual sunshine) I couldn't resist doing one more...just needed some food and hit the course for one more amazing experience! I have DEFINATELY been bit by the racing bug....training for Dalton begins Friday!

haha ... I wouldn’t think about racing with a different team. I'll try to train a little before the race next year - see if I can pull out a better night lap :)

Yeah, I wish I had taken more pictures. I always seem to forget to bring out the camera.

Hopefully the trip back to the west coast was a little less eventful that the trip out to AZ.

hehe...I realized that, after my 3rd lap I didn't drink anything but beer on Sunday....can't believe I actually could move on Monday morning! :D
