Would it bother you to receive a call from the cops in the middle of the night?

There were two Amber Alerts last night in town. Maybe it's cuz both were false reports, but there's several people all pissed off. Some are suggesting that they be allowed to opt-out of the reverse 9-1-1 calls.

Wait, they call everyone in town?

I'd be pissed off. Unless I actually kidnapped the kid, there's no chance that the missing child is currently in my house in the middle of the night.

Just the immediate area, like 3-4 blocks around.

One of the kids was having a sleep-over at a friend's house, but the 8 yo forgot to tell his parents.

So actually, it worked cuz the cops called that house and they said they have him.

I'd be calling the parents house every night at 3 in the morning for a month.

"Do you know where your brat is tonight? Because if you lost him again, I'm going to turn my ringer off."

I was riding through an area a couple weeks ago during a fresh Amber Alert. We took our time riding through and looking around under the helicopters and cops everywhere.

I just put myself in the parents shoes.

Also, I'm too drunk and passed out to hear my phone after 11 pm.

It would definately freak me out but seems like a reasonable request of the community.

I'm curious what the circumstances are where the people are requesting to opt out of the 911 call. Maybe there is a worthwhile reason why they're unwilling or unable to increase the chances of locating an abducted child before anything horrifying happens.

I'm a little more annoyed at the friend's parents. I think I'd call the other parents to verify that it is indeed okay for their kid to spend the night.

Probably cuz I know from my childhood that my buddies and I told our parents that we were spending the night at each other's houses and they never verified, then we'd spend the night roaming the 'hood.

Most people who don't want to be disturbed are blunt about it... "I'm not getting out of bed at 1am to look around, so what's the point? Blast is on the morning news and I'll keep an eye out for the kid on my drive to work."

I think if I had gotten the call (didn't) and knew that it was a kid only a few blocks away, I'd probably go looking.

But maybe I wouldn't since the gun freaks might be out and mistake me for a bad guy, boom, dead.

They lost their 8 year old. I can understand if the kid was 14 how this happens, but 8?

That's just lazy irresponsible parenting.

Do they also call in CA? I ask because I thought the freeway signs were the extent of it.

Oh, yes, officer, he's tied up in my basement with a ball gag. You should probably come over and arrest me. Bring a bunch of you and lots of handcuffs!!
