I have long thought that single ring set-ups for off road (CX too) were a good idea, but until the XX1 debuted there was never enough range for mere mortals. When the SRAM stuff came out I thought, awesome. However, the cost was not so awesome. I now have a similar combo as you review here mine however is a SRAM-based system (XO/X-9 with a OneUp cog and a Wolf Tooth 30t ring). It has performed flawlessly and was simple to set up. I may eventually nab a SRAM 1X system, but the hack is tough to beat for the cost. In addition, I have spoken with a number of riders and they all have had better luck with hacking the SRAM 10 speed systems than with Shimano.
