RF Diabolus 1.5" stem question...

I've been looking at a few online shops and no one seems to list the 1.5 Diabolus stem with the 31.8mm clamp... Does it come standard with the 31.8 or is it the more common size, 25.something?

Any reasons why it wouldn't have a 31.8 clamp?

cheers :)

call raceface and ask. now there's an idea.

the raceface.com website lists the regular clamp diabolus in 1.5 and 1.125. then there's the 31.8 clamp diabolus on a separate page, and it doesn't specify ST but looks to be 1.125.

so mebbe there isn't a 1.5 / 31.8 version? i know there is an FSA that comes in that size.

I called last year. They make one or the other. They don't make 1.5 w/31.8 OS bar bore and they said they don't plan on making it.

hmm, did they give a reaon why?

seems stupid not to make one! Not keen on the FSA ones, my mates keep breaking the front clamp plates on them. They snap in the middle horizontally...

also the FSA was not very knee-friendly when I looked at it.

i've had zero problems w/ the 1.5 diabolus.

do the new 31.8 Thomsons come in 1.5 inch ST?

hmm....well both of my FSA stems are holding up great...one is going on 2 years...the FR version can beat up the knees but the DH version is rounded...it's really not an issue for me becasue I wear knee pads....D

yeah i wear pads too but on long uphill climbs that are mostly non-technical i don't wear the pads esp. on a hot day...and occasionally (okay, it's damn rare) i whack a knee while getting thru a weird uphill hairpin fer example.

i have long legs, and on all my bikes i avoid stems that have sharp projections...

any pics of the Thomson stem?

i guess 31.8 isn't needed but my current 1.125" 31.8 Diabolus is noticeably stiffer than my last 25.4mm set up.

Try SIC stems, they do a 1.5" 31.8mm version.

The LL stem has been really good to me. I love it! You can go back to 25.4mm if you want to as well with the included inter-locking shims.

no worries, found some pics.

looks way to XC really. They even claim its the strongest 31.8 stem on the market! Not sure about that...
just keep in mind that the Thomson seatpost was designed to be light but strong...back in the XC days...and yet many of us are using that same 'XC light' post design on our DH and FR bikes today. high grade materials, smart one-piece design = strong but light.

this new thomson stem might be stronger than it looks (or weighs). who knows. time will tell, but i wouldn't write them off now.

on the subject of Thomson...i was talking to an engineer at one of their competitors (hint: it was either FSA, RaceFace, or Titec ;) ) and he was whining that Thomson made all their money doing aerospace parts, and had $$$$ to burn on expensive manufacturing equipment technology that other bike companies couldn't afford.

then he went on to say that Thomson barely made any money at all on bike parts, it was more like a sideline they did just for the hell of it. he was pissed at having to compete w/ thomson.

meanwhile i didn't say anything, and just thought Hmmmm this guy's whining is giving me even more reasons to buy thomson.

no going to write it off yet...

Just doesn't look as strong as a RF Diabolus. Weighs in at 170g (thereabouts) which is amazing if it's as strong as they say.
