On the closing kilometers of the stage, a line of Team Saxo Bank riders formed the front of the peloton chasing the escapees. After a job well done at the front, Richie Porte launched a deadly counter-attack. The furious move from the Aussie was however followed by several of the overall favorites and going under the red kite, Wouter Poels (Vacansoleil) made a bold attack and took the prize in front of the raging chase group.

Team Saxo Bank Aussie is a neo pro on the Danish team and has had a spectacular debut season. In Tour of Britain, he is now second overall leading the sprint classification while Michael Albasini (HTC-Columbia) keeps the leader's jersey for one more day.

”Tour of Britain is really a tough race and on the first climb after five kilometers, the peloton exploded and a group of twenty riders took off forming the front group of which we were represented by five of our riders. On the closing part of the stage, we took the initiative with HTC-Columbia to move to the front to wheel in a small group that escaped earlier. Then Richie (Porte) did the only right thing to do. He took a chance and attacked but unfortunately they were right behind him. The team is working perfectly together demonstrating great team spirit under pressure. It's a real pleasure working with these riders,” commented sports director, Torsten Schmidt after the stage.
