ride monkey advert leads to infection?

just FYI the boobage ad that was up on the right side of RM yesterday seems to have led me to a Zango page that downloaded a lot of spyware/virus crapola.

which of course reminds me: don't let the little man do the thinking....

and the devious part of the situation is that I clicked the ad, but didn't click ANYTHING on the Zango page.

and now to clean my computer.... le sigh

if you don't pony up the dough to be a ridemonkey member (note to self: must save some dinars and do that this year) then you see adverts. some of them ads are tricksy and have boobage on them. and then you aren't awake enough to realize that the boobage is a trap and there you are on Zango's web page having all sorts of horsepoo download and attempt execution on your computadore.

RM: please don't allow Zango or other obvious douchebags to buy ad slots on your site. :bonk:

While I feel sorry for you, based on prior conversations: BWARHARHAAAAAR... :bonk: :clue:

If you'd stop humping the monkeys and stay on the antibiotics, the infection would clear itself up.

I'll look into that ad. Our ads are provided by networks who are supposed to filter out that kind of thing...but occasionally **** up.

Do you remember which forum you were in?

What shuttles is saying is get you a browser with some adblockage or get a good HOSTS file.
ZoneAlarm and Windows kept the spyware from doing anything. I don't run Anti-Virus as I've found that most AV software doesn't actually block infections. I used to work in the information security sphere. I'll probably just slag the installation of Windows on that hard drive and reformat. Cleaning spyware on Windows is a waste of time.

This has been such a nice reminder of why I left the industry and now play farmer in Hawaii.

Nice.

If you run Linux, it's a non-issue.
What are you smoking, all OS/software have holes.

The other major browser (my personal choice) Firefox has several big security issues. 2.0.0.5 came out and then they realized they should fix some other holes quickly so 2.0.0.6 this week. There are others still there...

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html

Yesterday, the Mozilla Foundation released an update to fix eight security vulnerabilities in Firefox 2.0.0.4, for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh.
2.0.0.6 was for 2 security issues...

But Linux, by nature doesn't Auto-Install. If you run ANY OS properly (as in NOT as root/admin), you can avoid infection, it's just that things like Linux (Ubuntu in my case) doesn't even have a root account.

How many spyware applications have been written for Linux? I've never seen one, but I've also never looked.

<edit> I'm a QA Engineer, I get paid to exploit holes in software.

Yes then you know all software has bugs and flaws, just because one is more inherently secure than the other doesn't mean you can't exploit it.

Thanks for playing.

The topic was the idea of spyware being installed based on following a banner ad. My comment was that it would be safer to surf porn on Linux based on the idea of inherent security.

hmmm... let's see. in the past 20 years of using computers I've had my systems infected twice. Once because I clicked on a Ride Monkey advert. Once because my sister visited my house and someone mailed her a virus. Neither case resulted in my infecting other systems. So that's 20 years of not paying for AntiVirus and two infections on my systems.

How's your track record H8R?

Once on an old W98 work machine. Chernobyl virus.

My home machines? Never. I used Mcaffee and then later AVG.

Now? Ubuntu. Zero problems.

Just for that I am NOT going to recommend you doing a Google image search for "Macintosh" and viewing the second image because I am not a jerk.

In the 21+ years (my first computer was an Apple IIc in Xmas of 1984?), the only computer I personally used with a virus on it was the one at my internship at Bell Labs at Red Hill and it had the virus on it before I used it and was without virus protection. Of course it was a lot harder to get viruses before the widespread use of the Internet though (unless you liked waiting to download stuff on painfully slow modems on BBS and were lucky enough to find a virus?), so you should really say when you started using larger networks like Compuserve or WWW w/Lynx or Mosaic (I think I tried Mosaic in 93?).

When I worked at McAfee, I had access to the Avert live virus lab. I have infected a lot of machines, all in the name of science.

At Key Labs (in Utah), I infected 1800 machines in under 2 minutes, it was awesome.
