bye bye 98' tacoma. Warrantied for frame corrosion. I'm disappointed it won't go out in a ball of fire like I was hoping. And man am I gonna miss driving that thing drunk at platty. On the upside, I'll be getting way more for it than its worth. So now I'm in the market for a new vehicle. Requirements:

    -4wd or awd
-decent gas mileage (my tacoma was about 20mpg, would like to get this bumped to at least the 25mpg range, would prefer higher)
    -reliable
    -used
    -target price range $15-$20k

On a more serious note, you looking more at another pickup or shifting to a SUV/crossover/wagon?

AWD and decent gas mileage don't really go together. Honesty, the best thing you could get would be a 3-4yo RAV4. My inlaws have one and it's quite peppy, rails in the snow like you'd expect an Impreza to do, and gets close to 30mpg.
Toyota reliability counts for something. Sure, yours failed. But you can't say they didn't make it right.
The only downside is it handles like you'd expect a vehicle with a short wheel base/high center of gravity to.

Forester. I'm not sure where you got the unreliable bit from? This isn't the era of '98 DOHC head gaskets anymore.

Juke, if there are any out there used yet and you are in the "like it" camp.

Otherwise any of the small-car-based 'utes will work: RAV4 as above, CR-V or even an Element, Sportage, Terrain, etc.

i'd take a hard look at the Element. it sounds like you dont like subarus, but i have a 2010 outback with a hitch rack. hauls 2 bikes with room to spare. gets 25-27mpg

Considering im coming from a tacoma that got 20mpg highway, awd will be an improvement.

And i have nothing against toyota. Ive been very happy with mine.. The frame corrosion issue was wel known, and i was half expexting this. My entire family owns toyotas, my fiancee leases a camry. Toyota has limited options for awd, and im honestly not a fan of the rav4 styling.

That issue was isolated to a few model years? I wouldnt rule them out if its improved. Ill look into it this weekend.

I like the crv, but they are basically out of my price range

Forgot about the element, those are good for car camping too.

I was only unsure about subies because of the old head gasket issues.

    2007+ CRV's are mid-teens and up.

my mother had a Element and it was somewhat big inside but everything about the car felt cheap. and the gas pedal was just a noise maker really.

Not sure, but if Nissan's crossover line is anything like their pickups/SUVs they're pretty good. My dad has a Frontier, mother had an X-Terra and good friend has a Pathfinder. All have/has been great.

EDIT - holy eff balls, maybe not.......just did a quick search for used Muranos in/around Boston and they hover right around $30k (and I'm talking '08/'09)....never would have guessed they were that pricey.

mid-high teens for the last gen one. great cars but the interiors of the last gen Murano is ugly IMO

murano are nice. roomier inside than it appears from the outside. drives smooth, but alittle too car like for me.

i think "soccer mom" when i see muranos and highlanders

element interiors and (early-model) exteriors are indeed plastic-ky, but i thought you were able to basically take a hose to the inside and clean off the dirt and grime.

i really liked the element and it was gonna be my second vehicle until the wife basically put the kybosh on it. her firm rejection of the element probably aided my acquisition of the tacoma :D

What he said. Jon, you must have had some old info on Foresters. Ask me in person if I ever get time off school to come to Platty - had mine since '98. Outbacks are also in the same league. Just slap a hitch rack on the back, a coffin on the top and you're golden for racing.

Jon, there were only a certain range of subies that had the head issues. As mentioned earlier, as long as you stick to newer models you'll be fine. Our 05 impreza wagon runs like a swiss watch. The only issue I've had was induced by PO hack remote starter install. It needs struts but its at 72k miles so thats to be expected. +1 for lesbaru.

Here. I'm just not sure where "here" is.
Last year I bought an '08 Taco, extended cab, I4, manual, 6' bed, no electric anything, for $19,500, and get 20-24mpg depending on my driving style. Consumer Reports rated the '08 Taco as better than the '09 and later ones.

shane, shoot me an email and give me the lowdown. i'm gonna go look at an '08 2.5i wagon. A brand new 2011 2.5i wagon is only a grand more, but has less horsepower (148 for the '11, 170 for the '08)
