It was so sad how her family & the media used video of her all twisted up, confined to her bed in her brain-dead state. I am sure she really wanted to be plastered all over FOX News & other channels, news papers, websites, etc...

I am going to make a clause in my living will, that no video, pics, of me are to be taken.

I thought this whole thing was appalling... Just a bunch of kids, screaming back and forth and Terri getting a food tube popped in and out like it was some kind of toy that each side was taking back once the other one got a turn to play.

RIP Terri.

standing at the edge of reason
the docs think she had an eating disorder, which could indicate that she was really sensitive about body image and whatnot. can you imagine what she would have thought about those shots of her all curled up and drooling everywhere??

at any rate, wherever she is, she will have more peace than she did here.

I am surprised she lived for 14 days without food and water. That is longer than I expected.

In any rate, this was an unfortunate situation. May she rest in peace.

You know I never even thought about putting a clause like that in my living will, but it definitely sounds like a good idea.

Here's a thought that will probably get this thread moved to the Political forum, but what the heck. If it is ethical and "humane" to remove a feeding tube and allow someone to slowly starve to death, why is unethical/illegal for a patient in a similar vegetative state to have an assisted suicide? My wife and I were discussing this and it makes no sense.

The answer is the difference between nature and murder. And I'm not casting a judgement call on "murder" in this context, just can't think of another word.

I bugs me that they just let her die that way. I know even talking about it is a no win deal. But it does really bother me.
Criminals are but to death more human then that.
I would not let my dog go out that way. And if I did I would end up in jail. How could someone let a person die that way??

Sq-Earl & I had the same discussion. We're definately going to get some paperwork drawn up and make all of our wishes known to both of our families. This whole situation was just awful!

I wonder if the news of the popes request to not be put on life support, effected any religious supporters of terri's. But I'm sure the pope wouldnt want to starve to death either. May that poor woman RIP.

Over there somewhere.
First of all, this never should have been a national topic, it should have been private between the husband and her parents. Even in a vegatative state, everyone has a right to privacy I feel. R.I.P Terri.

I read a bunch of Dr.'s opinions on starving to death. Supposedly, it very euphoric and calm, and you don't even feel hungry after a few days. This whole thing should've ended 15 yrs ago.

What I'm trying to figure out is how the "religious" group finds it wrong to let someone die. If they are being forced to stay alive, aren't they being kept out of the holy land? The whole left/right issue here has me confused, it seems inverted to me
That's because even all of them were split down the middle.
Some religious people fought for her life, and some thought it was God's will for her to die. The same thing happened with politicians.
You had Jesse Jackson siding with Republicans for Godsakes.
There really is no religious or political precedent when it came to her case.
That is about the only thing positive I can think of that came from this though.
This whole thing was horrendous. Having to see that poor women on every news channel with one side pretending she was not already braindead, and the other side just wanting her die at all costs. Once again, human beings came off looking pretty $hitty as always.

you know, it boils down to a medical ethical issue that got turned into a national publicity nightmare. two groups of adults bickering like little kids about this whole situation. It wasnt even about her anymore it was about the husband/family and who got the final say. i am glad she is releived of this now and i hope that she was not aware of what was happening throughout this 5 year stint of media bliss, but on another note i dont really care.

I think the one good thing that came of all this is that many more americans are realizing just how important it is to have both wills and living wills.

i saw a very interesting newscast on last night, with the "Vatican Doctor" saying that a feeding tube is not a means of artificial life support, therefore the pope isn't really on life support, just getting some "help" with his coloric intake....
seems a bit like bull to me....

Boy that's true. I've been thinking about that a lot lately.

I can't believe this whole thing has gone on for 15 years. Think about how much/what you've done for the past 15 years... started/finished college? marriage?? started a career??

That poor woman was in a hospital room the WHOLE time.

Yeah, what happened to the rule of 3's?

3 weeks with out food.
3 days with out water.
3 minutes with out oxygen.

She must have been well hydrated to start with.

Regardless of my morbid curiosity, I'm glad its over. No matter how you look at it, its a terrible thing for everyone that was involved (which was unfortunately everyone with a TV on this planet).

I think the 3s are being able to function. Just laying there is different. A doctor on MSNBC said it typically takes 10-14 days in these cases.

Nam I am
Well , I went through this sort of thing , Shortly Before my father died , he was going to be moved back to a nursing home and "Let nature takes its course " but we had to make a decsion as to weather to insert a feeding tube. , Fortunatly he Passed before whe had to make that decision, but I was DEAD set against it ! My father when he was in his right mind would not have wanted it.

Anyone else tired of hearing about this ****? Now that shes gone we've still got 2 months of coverage and bill passing, fools will make a "Shiavo law" about this never happening again. There's 1000's of cases like this all around the world, IDK what's so special about this one now (esp. since it's be going on for 15 years). Sorry but I'd much rather give my attention to the soilders in Iraq then some vegetable that has been kept alive for a long ass time. Don't get me wrong the whole starving to death thing is bad, I'd much rather be put to sleep.

Funny (ironic) how legally the hospital/state can't assist her in dying (in a humane fashion) but they can force her to die from starvation/dehydration. How fvcking humane

We really need to get God out of law...

I know plenty of surfers and athletes who can hold their breath longer than 3 minutes (World record static dive is almost 9min I believe) and plenty of smokers who can't hold theirs for 1. Many people have gone more than 3 weeks w/o food in protest including Caesar Chavez if I recall correctly. Lying in bed in a temperature/humidity controlled environment apparently allows a person in a sedentary/vegetative state to live quite a long time w/o water.

So I guess those 3's are more to give a general idea for a person who is say lost in wild and facing the elements etc.

It is Caesar Chavez Day today...I'm pissed off that those bastard state employees got the day off and us city fools didn't!
