Well this is a new one... I work market hours so I leave at 3:40am every day.

I'm not sure how to bring this up with her as she yelled at me for vacuuming Wifey's car a few weeks back. None of my other neighbors have complained, including those who are directly in the line of the exiting exhaust, and I proactively ask if I am bothering people by doing my car work and the sound of my car in the morning. Even with lady upstairs with a new baby says she doesn't hear it and it doesn't bother the baby.

It looks like I will be parking over by the pool now, backed into the spot, as there are not condo's within direct line of the exhaust that way. It is still very frustrating, as I have a covered spot so that I don't need to get into my car in the rain.

I am probably going to be moving to CO in June, so I am tempted to ignore this. However I have been looking into picking up an STI mid-pipe back to reduce the sound output somewhat. This could be an accelerant to that plan, which is unfortunate as the parts I will need and additional work will not be cheap. Plus, if I am not able to do the work at my house it will likely cost me an additional $200.

The irony of this is that she sits on her patio on the phone all day yelling into the phone so loudly that you can hear her from the pool. For perspective, the pool is almost 200ft away.

This first bit is the exact setup that I have:

tell her to **** off or leave a note about how she jabbers endlessly on her patio super loud. If your exhaust meets all legal road db levels you can tell her to eat dick.

or better yet my personal favorite. Get her phone number if you can. wait a couple of weeks and from a library or inet cafe post a free trampoline in your local area on craigslist. He sure to add Si Habla Espanol to the add. Give some sob story about loosing the house and the internet being cut off so direct contact would be best.

I've also done free ad's for World or Warcraft lifesized Orc props. Going through nasty divorce and need it gone. Post her addy up and just say come and get it Saturday between 7am and 8am.

You have a custom exhaust on a forester?
The 2004/2005 Forester have the same block as an STI. I've removed all of the stock Forester intake/exhaust bits and replaced them with either STI or higher performance aftermarket bits. The reality is, at this point I have an STI wagon, with the suspension and braking bits to match.

Tell her to eat a dick! I have multiple loud vehicles and have the same attitude towards neighbors as yourself... She is just being a b*tch because nothing else in life brings her joy. A low rumble like that in the morning shouldn't be enough to disturb the whole neighborhood unless you're ripping out of the carport like Robby Gordon. I wouldn't go out of my way to modify it unless it was something you already plan on doing.

Seems reasonable enough to me. If I were being woken up past 11pm by some "renter" working on his car Id complain too.

But If I were you I'd at least retaliate by killing one of her cats or something.

so you have a Fart Can on a Forester:rofl:

is there an Aero kit and a Stereo for the deaf installed too?
No, I hate ricer kids. I have the quietest 3" exhaust available for Subaru's. It has some burble, but it quiet unless I go full throttle. But any car at full throttle will go up notably in decibels.

JohnnyPop - The one issue I have is that she is a home owner and can see to it that my landlord gets harassed about the 'noise'. I am very considerate in the morning and shift into 2nd at 2k rpm and basically roll out of the neighborhood since it is mostly downhill. The only thing I think she can be complaining about is when I back out of my spot, which is slightly downhill.

Good point. Maybe nail the carcass to her door joker or put it in her mailbox.

I've got a neighbor who will sit out in his yard and shoot guns some afternoons. My dogs freak out at the report, and it's pretty annoying while Im trying to watch Maury... the upside is that he sights his guns in at a target about 5-10 yards away from his huge propane tank, so Im pretty sure he'll blow up himself and his house soon. Can't wait for that day.

The after 11pm never occurred. One time we were out until just after 10pm, with the car off, not realizing how late it was. We stopped immediately once we saw the time.

In that case Id knock on her door and tell her she's an idiot and to leave you alone.

Some of your comments are hilarious. The CA legal decibel level is 95 db. I'm going to have it tested later this week to make sure that I comply. If I do, I will be replying to her letter with that information in hand.

While she can complain about the work I have been doing, in 21 months she never once made a comment until her snip about vacuuming my car and then today.

I'm not sure what recourse she will have if I am legal. I can always go to TechShop to do my maintenance, so that's not a limitation.

As someone with a motorcycle and odd hours, I usually start and go (and I live on a hill, so I can roll down and annoy strangers vs my neighbors).

I also cut it when I am near my house, even if that means I have to duck walk my bike to its parking spot.

My dad had a set of Dunstall pipes for his '76 R90S that he used to put on for beamer rallys and the like. When he put them on and tested them out in our driveway, those things would rouse Davy Jones....

Fortunately, one of our neighbors had installed a supercharger on his K100RS and understood our obsession....

If the car's exhaust is legal, she can choke on a dong. Be sure to tell her that it's legal by CARB standards and that she has no say in what time you start your car and drive off or in.

Talk to your landlord before she does. Let him/her know the situation. Be honest and if she's still a cunt craigslist a free trampoline for her. Trust me, 150 calls in spanish in the first hour asking about her free trampoline will annoy the **** out of her.

This is the second time you've offered brilliant suggestions. + rep to you sir.

Seriously, if you've done all these things and she's still a bitch, you live in the bay area, go to the sketchiest "adult" store near your zip code, and buy the freakiest dildo you can find, and maybe a Japanese squid porn DVD. Box it up with a note, "from your concerned neighbor".

The tag cloud is showing some promise.

I am on your side with the fart can and all. Two of my friends have the XT forester with STI suspension on them and those wagons rule. Pretty much an STI wagon. I think they're awesome.

I hear you, but given that I am quiet when we are working on the car and (as far as I'm aware) my car is within the legal dB levels, I'm kind of pissed.

Either way, I'll just do my work at techshop now and she can deal with my exhaust if it is proven w/in legal levels.

I talked to my landlord about the complaint. Apparently the HOA has heard about a loud car, but have not been able to identify it. Given that we have maybe 100 residents and all park in front of their numbered spots makes me think that it is just a whiny neighbor. My landlord seems to agree and said to just do what I can to appease the neighbor, but not to worry about it.

45dB vs.94dB legal limit

She can go f* off. The audio band is low into the base levels, which is probably what she is complaining about. If she wants to push it farther and get specific numbers added to the HOA rules, she will be taking on the guys in the really nice condos who drive an M3, E65 AMG, and a Porsche. All of which are louder than mine.

As for the fart can comments, it is a low bass tone, not the screaming Honda. It sounds very similar to an old air cooled 911.
