im just wondering if i buy a 180mm domain without u turn can i make it 160mm travel? do i just buy a shorter spring like the one from the u turn version or do i have to buy different internals.

You don't need to change the spring; you just need to change the spring shaft assembly. It's the rod the spring sits on that runs through the lowers.

RS part # for the 160mm spring shaft assembly:
11.4015.044.010

You should be able to order through your LBS.
