Rohloff with 2 front rings?

I was on nsmb.com checking out the review of some crazy zero resistance shifter cables.
The author was running them on his VP-free using a Rohloff rear hub.
The only picture is of the rear of the bike.
Anyway, my Bulit is getting old and i'm itching for a new Uzzi or VP free both of which can mount a frount deral.
So my question is whether i can run 2 front rings with my evil DRS and use a Rohloff rear hub?
I've only seen Rohloff in person on crazy Nicolai bikes at Bigbear so i don't know much about the details.
Anyone here know if that possible?

ok this is theory.

based on the info given on the rohloff website it should be possible to use two chainrings as long as you don't use smaller chainrings then allowed

the smallest rings allowed are:
40/17, 38/16, 36/15 and 32/13

the first number is the chainring the 2nd is cog used on the rohloffhub

then you might have chainline issues, but i might be wrong on that one.
btw imho the use of 2 chainrings doesn't make sence.

should you intend to be VERY unique and "cool" you could think about getting a schlumpf speed drive instead of two front rings.
with that you increase the gear ratio from 526% to 868%

more info here:
http://www.schlumpf.ch/
btw the use of the schlumpf mountain speed drive is prohibited

if i understand this correctly with two chainrings or that schlumpf thing you will again have "double gears".
i.e. transmission ratios will appear twice just like on regular drivetrains.

hope that helped :)

theres a guy that runs 3 rings with a rolhoff that i've talked to in the past.
i got rid of mine cause it was damn heavy
he ran like, 34, 44, 54. or something like that.
pretty pointless, i was set with a 42tooth up front. didn't even use all the gears anyway.

Your face.
I thought the point of the Rohloff's ratio was to eliminate overlapping gears, and you want to add them back in?

Put a triple up front, use a 20mm rear and add on a 10speed cassette. that'll really give you some retardedly overlapped range. ;)

Wait a minute..................

A rolhoff system is meant to be used like a single speed..... Meaning chain tensioner, perfect chainline and just enought chain to fit over 1 cog and 1 chainring. There's a pretty big difference in chain length required to fit different sized chainrings about 10 teeth apart. You'd almost need a derailleur to take up the slack when shifting onto the smaller ring. Am I missing something here?

CAN you do it? Sure. But SHOULD you do it? Um, only if you want all the weight of a regular drivetrain plus the weight, cost, complexity, and inefficiency of a Rohloff. If that sounds good to you (and I dunno, maybe it does), go for it.

Kidwoo is correct, you would need to run a rear derailleur if you want to run a double up front, there would be too much chain slack for the regular tensioner.

You should be able to find a gear chart showing you the range of gears you get out of the Rohloff 14spd. As I recall the idea was to give a similar range as a standard xc setup (ie, a triple up front and like an 11-32 cassette), albeit with slightly larger jumps between each gear. Unless you have a huge difference between the two front rings you would end up with a lot of overlapping gears.

Maybe you can e-mail Tyler Klassen and see what he thinks, he ran a Rohloff on a vp-free for a while...

Do you have to run a derailer with a Roloff hub and a single ring? I guess it would depend on the rear axle path and chaingrowth hu????
