I saw this earlier and I must confess to being a bit baffled that people think it's shocking or outrageous. Seems like a guy who's well versed in his particular theology. He was a LDS bishop after all. Of course it's batsh*t, but if you didn't already know that you have perhaps not been paying attention. This is how I know it's about race, because the right doesn't give a fvck about Mitt's magic undies, teh Missouri Jeebus, the LDS proclivity towards insurrection/rebellion, or the "theodemocracy" promoted in the White Horse Prophesy. It's fvcking off the scale looney but the evangelical right doesn't care because he's white.

So sad and yet oh so true.

They are going to sh!t themselves if he gets elected and tries to pull off some of that crazy a$$ mormon stuff..........

When I brought this up with some of my conservative friends they pointed out the same uproar over JFK being a Catholic, everyone was afraid the Pope would be calling the shots.

Yea, but JFK wasn't ordained hierarchy. I think the distinction matters.

Political fanatacism is looking a lot like religious fanatacism these days. Both are hard for me to watch.

Look, it's not any stupider than Christianity.

Really, it's not. Remember Obama flopping on gay marriage?

The evangelical right doesn't care how crazy it is because they are at least as crazy. I don't know if you've ever been around mental illness, but I've noticed that crazy people understand each other, even when the crazy isn't the same. My sample size isn't huge, and I fully admit it's anecdote and not data.

But straight christianity is based solely on tales told much longer ago, when education was much more sparse and limited, and hence, WAY more credible.
I've drawn the analogy before, but the printing press is older than Mormonism. There is no credible reason for anybody to buy that bullsh*t. Yet here we are. :(

Go read the bible. Actually READ the bible. There's plenty of bat-sh*t-crazy in there, it's just that "Christians" choose to "interpret" it how the want, and they intentionally leave out parts to keep it from seeming so crazy. It's basically "pick and choose", but when presented with the many contradictions or crazy/horrible things, they just say that they don't believe that part.

Go read John Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven"......that's a real eye opener. When the LDS folks were in Ill, J. Smith's next objective was the White House and make the whole US a Mormon paradise.

I'm not going to devolve into a "Christianity isn't crazy" arguement, but LDS theology vs. orthodox Christian theology is certianly interesting......some examples.

>Moromon husbands can choose to call their wives from their version of purgatory to heaven. This is something J. Smith did alot with 13-14 year old girls. He'd tell them God said they should be married (or at least let him f$ck them) or they'd go to hell if they refused.

>Once a Mormon husband calls his wife to heaven, if they achieve a certain "level' of salvation, they will be given a planet and made "god" of that planet. The LDS god, was once a human and was given earth to rule. Jesus and Satan are brothers and the children of god and the goddess mother. If you ever want to run some LDS missionaries off your front step, ask them how you can get your own planet, and to explain the goddess mother.

Those are just two examples, the lack of any sort of archeological evidence of Nephites and their civilization in the Western Hemisphere.

Now with all that said, I saw a piece on the LDS church a few months ago, and in spite of, IMO, some off the wall theology, they have a rockin welfare system. No one has to go without in their communities regardless of your faith. I was very impressed, it put "real" Christian organizations to shame.

This is very true. Nobody takes care of their own like the Mo's. Though, by all accounts leaving the church is like contracting gay leprosy. Much like any cult, the apostate is verboten to the max.

They also had John Huntsman's daughter on (I would have voted for him in a heartbeat, but I digress). She married a non-Mo and was excommunicated.....it's crazy because she was sad she had to leave the church.

the evangelical right doesn't care because he's not a european minded "socialist".
just a slight correction

I don't know if you've ever been around *wanna be politicians*, but I've noticed that crazy people understand each other, even when the crazy isn't the same.
greed for power is still greed, and crosses all barriers

Nobody takes care of their own like the Mo's.

ok, just watched the vid, and must say romney is far more impressive about defending his faith & how it matches up to how is has & plans to govern than, say, obama & his church.

tell me i'm wrong?

That's not *quite* that far off from "generic Christian" theology. Satan was highest-placed among all of the other angels and the right-hand of God before pride caused him to challenge God. Jesus is the Son of God (again, no mother but frequently refers to god as his Father) and also is God, who along with the Holy Spirit make up God. So God+Jesus+Holy Spirit=God.

And that's what I'm voting for Obama. Obama is purposely vague about the correlation between his faith and his policies because he knows the secular dynamic of this country is changing.

Am I the only person in Murica that thought that book was ****e? And I don't mean on a theological/FSM/philosophical level, just that it was a poorly written, saccharine slab of tripe?

Why does religion matter so much in US politics? I have no idea what church or religion our Canadian PM goes to or believes in. Frankly I couldn't give a flying **** as long as he runs the country properly and respects the beliefs of the entire country within reason.

If I was an American I'd be worried about the country being run by the old boys in SLC if Romney got in.

That's because you live in a first world country. We vote for people that are you know........'most like us'.

And that means beleiving in fairy tales because education is a socialist ploy.

what? you didn't read The Shack? i thought every fundie was given this by their wife after a Beth Moore study
Because I'm neither a) a "fundie" or b) have a wife that would step one toe into a Beth Moore Bible Study. Although truth be told she'd probably not get invited to one in the first place.......too much body ink......

Why does "faith" have to be defended? I mean I don't go around defending Jesus, I don't go around defending the reasons why I love my wife, or my kids......
Clearly you are not insecure enough about yourself.

Well I think you are big steaming pile of crap! Feeling like you need to defend your views yet?
