just wondering if anyone knows if xt disc rotors are compatable with eithe hayes or avid brakes. they are all 160mm so it should work but i am looking for anyony who has ever tried it out and what their experiance was.
thanks

I know I used a Grimeca rotor (virtually identical to Shimano) with Hayes and it worked. The thickness was a little different so I had to adjust for that. Also, it seemed like stopping power went down when I switched. Could have been that something got on the pads but, maybe not. I wouldn't do it if you could avoid it but it will work okay.

I haven't done it, but it will work - the XT rotors have a narrower brake track than Hayes, so the Hayes pads will contact the rotor "spokes" a little - that's not a problem really. It will probably give you a tad less stopping power as JRogers said, b/c there will be less pad contact. I don't really know about Avids, whether they'll hit the 'spokes' or not, but I don't think it matters...

thanks for the feed back guys. I am not planning to use the xt rotors anytime soon but i have two bikes with avid and one with hayes and no correct replacement rotors. I will probably hold the xts for backup as i tend to ding rotors a regular basis and they can only be bent back straight so many times before they attain this small wobble woble woble that i cant make go away despite my best efforts.

I think as long as diameter thickness and depth of the brake track are the same, you're good to go. I wouldn't use an xt with Hayes though because only part of the pad is on the track so there is less surface area and less braking power. Plus the pads will wear at an angle and won't last as long.
