Rotor swap question

I currently have Hayes HFX9 8" brakes on my bike, but would like to swap down to 6" rotors. I have some old 6" Avid rotors which I was thinking about using, and have ordered the appropriate rear caliper adaptor. Is there any reason why this switch wouldn't work. I don't see why not, but can you swap rotors between different brake systems like this?

Should be fine, as long as the 6" rotors are the same diameter as the Hayes. I know Avid changed their size of their "6 inch" rotor a bit within the past couple years.

I'd still go with a Hayes rotor, tho', IMO. Stronger that Avid's.

Prior to 2002, Avid 6" rotors were 165mm, now they are 160mm and not interchangable according to Avid, because the old rotors will hit the top of the new caliper; problem lining up braking surface the other way around. Not sure which ones you already have, but could work, I'd measure and compare rotors first. 2.5mm vertically doesn't sound like a lot, but it is with brake caliper allignment. You may be able to adjust this with different thickness washers on the caliper bracket screws too. The thickness of the rotor makes no difference obviously.

An Avid 160mm so called 6" rotor is actually 6 9/32", so 6" doesn't really tell us much here in reference to the Hayes rotors. Anyone have an exact milimeter measurement on a Hayes 6" rotor?

Hayes 6" are 160mm. So are Shimanos/Grimecas. And some of the Formulas. And the new Hopes. And I think Maguras too?

Not too many folks using 165mm any more, that I know of.

You can use a 165 in a 160 Hayes system by putting a washer or two in between the caliper and IS adapter at each bolt, that raises it up high enough that the rotor won't touch the top of the caliper.

Between Avid and Hayes, I think that one rotor is slightly thicker than the other. Deffinately not a "deal breaker", but if the Avid rotor is thicker, you may need to rebleed. If the Avid is thinner, the Hayes caliper should self-adjust. If I am correct about this, the difference in size was only .1's of millimeters.
