Router problems

Quo Fan

don't make me kick your ass
I have a Linksys WRT54G router, and for the past 2 days, after a few hours I have to restart the router to do anything on my network.

Should I update the firmware? It is v1.00.1, Sept 20, 2005.

BTW, I don't have to restart my modem when this happens, just the router.

routers "should" be replaced every 2 years or so. This is normal. It will continue to work a little longer if you do a hard reset (192.168.1.1 > advanced > restore defaults). This will reset everything to the "new and out of box" condition, but it will stop again soon as they are made to fail.

That router is 20 bucks (sometimes 10 or free after rebate) at circuit city.

Update to the latest firmware. That's always the first troubleshooting step. Then see what happens.

BTW, ^ that's not been my experience with Linksys routers. My current one is about two and a half years old or so with not a single problem. There are two at work that are the same age or older, also no problems. My old Linksys wireless router was 3 years old when I finally upgraded to G but had no problems and eventually went to MtnBikerChk, don't know how long she used it for.
