I especially liked this:
He denied that his departure is designed to avoid congressional scrutiny as the Democrat-controlled Congress subpoenas White House staffers to testify in the case of several fired U.S. attorneys.

"I know they'll say that," Rove told the Wall Street Journal, "But I'm not going to stay or leave based on whether it pleases the mob."
Discuss.

While I am happy to see him gone, it's too bad he's going to slip out from underneath the congressional scrutiny.

Incidentally, they updated the article and removed the piece I quoted. Funny. They did add this gem, though:
When asked for his reaction to those who say he's being "run out of town," Rove responded, "That sounds like the rooster claiming to have called up the sun."

he accomplished all that was important.

he kept big Al ("global warming is real. why won't anyone listen to me.") Gore and John Kerry from the whitehouse.

that alone is worth high praise.

And why was that important?

I'm being sincere in asking. What was the Republican party concerned about with Dems in charge?

The dems (people, not the politicians) had at least one public concern -- the direction of Iraq. I'm not saying they'd have done a better job, just saying that was an issue.

What were the repubs afraid of if the Dems were in office? And please, the whole terrorism argument is absurd, so try to come up with something else.

Not to bring this back to topic, but I have a hard time analyzing political manueving.

The first thought I had when I heard the announcement was, why is he retiring?

I am not sure how this is going to remove the heat from Bush/Gonzales. I would think only a resignation from Alberto will satisfy the Dems.

Rove was (and will to some degree remain) in the untouchable area due to the awful power W gave himself early on. He walks away very happy and very rich, with no accountability.

I only hope he gets hit by a bus, that would be awesome.

ya, thank GOD the Dems didn't get elected, or we'd have increased government spending, huge deficits, bloated congressional pet projects, corruption, a foreign policy based on intervening in world affairs, etc. Thank god that W won, since now we have a humble foreign policy, lower deficits, lower spending, smaller government and a "uniter not a divider" as the head of the country.

wait a minute...

you would think that all of these highly ranked officials in the executive branch resigning would send up red flags with the public...

It had been made clear that the Bush Admin lied, err, misunderstood the intell that lead to the 'invasion' before the 2004 election... and people STILL voted for him!

No president in history has ever lost an election during a time of war. No matter how bad they suck, nobody wants to change horses mid-race. Sad but true.

He has just stepped aside so he can work on his next project - Gov. Rick Perry (TX).

Rove has been trying to figure out who should take over the destiny next, and has spent a lot of time in the last year with Gov. Perry.

Look for him in 2012

If the Dems had been elected, you'd still have all the bull**** fallout from this ill-begotten, ill-decided war...and the blame would be squarely on the Democrats for the way they "mishandled" the situation they walked in on.

Not that I'm much of a fan of the Dems (nor am I a Bush fan, mind you), but they are now in a politically strong position due to the loss of the last election.
