I recently watched the documentary Valley Uprising on Netflix which explained how much of an influence he (and others) had on rock climbing in Yosemite.

Chouinard, Robbins, Harding those guys were my heroes growing up
I spent most of the 80s and 90s climbing in Yosemite and working in the climbing industry as well as at the retail level. I met Royal once ( same for Warren Harding) but mostly I knew the next generation of climbers although I did hang out with Werner Braun, TM Herbert and Doug Robinson. Mostly I knew the SAR guys, Pete Takeda, Ron Kauk, Andrew Stevens and from the industry side hosting Hans Florrine's speed climbing slide shows. I miss climbing, my shoulders are shot, fingers are arthritic and I am not risking tearing the distal head of my biceps tendon in two again...old age sucks
