Okay, I want a sub 5 pound 20mmTA 32mm stanchion fork with 3.5-5" travel that will mostly be used at 4". It needs to be strong enough to dirt jump on, but will not be used for crazy hucks. It will be run mostly at Kenter Whoops. These are past forks I have tried & why they did not work for me:

03 DJ1 - felt great, THE most plush fork, but wayyyy too heavy.

04 Firefly Sherman - Travel adjust broke on small doubles & got stuck in 5" travel - if it came stock with 4" it would have been perfect. Strong otherwise, but much more stiction than the DJ, even with no SPV going on.

04 Talas - super light, best quality finish & materials of the rest, but feels flexy landing bigger stuff (mostly because it is QR). Not as progressive as the DJ1 (will quickly eat through most of it's travel). Definitely will keep for racing 4x though. The lightest fork I am willing to use on a track. Loskout threshold knob sets it up a a SPV type platform for 4X starts.

02 Psylo SL - my first fork. It sucked all around.

Which brings me to the Pike. If it is anything like the psylo, forget it. If RS has done a 180 and made a great quality fork that can take DJ abuse, then I am interested. Has anyone tried it for DJing rather than just trail riding? Price not an issue - i found one for $360.

04 Sherman Flick is 90-130mm and 1 1/8" HT. The Jumper is a 3" Flick. Much better damping tech than a DJ, and since SPV is hot right now it's Manitou's cheapest Sherman.

"Stiction" on the Firefly is probably the SPV. SPV is designed to not move when you pedal, but that also means no small bump compliance. I don't like it.

hey sorry, can i get the cliff notes for that-you wrote so much back up info and logical explination behind that response, i just dont have the time to read it.

Seriously-Rock Shox has really turned around. I own a Boxxer team, and its super plush. I am considering the Pike Race to replace my Sherman Firefly-Just to mix it up a little.
From what i hear-Its plusher, stronger, and more adjustable then any of the older Rock Shox forks.
I Say go for it.

I'm really interested to know how it holds together: I promised myself "never again" after finding out RS didn't support forks older than 2 years. Has this policy changed?

I looked into the Pike but the axle-to-crown is too low for my frame -- dropping the front end 20mm would be bad.

Stiction on the firefly that I am referring is just that - stiction. I am talking with SPV off it still has stiction.

Why woudl you replace the firefly with a PIke Race? They are about same weight, Sherman is stronger. Unless you need the travel down to jump-friendly 4".

THe reson I say this is because:I have bent three ROCK SHOX, they are a pain to maintain the plushness on them, they all bottom out too easialy, And the customer service through them is horible.

Don't listen to people who have never ridden or even seen ridden a pike. A pike is a wonderful fork for drops and jumps. My friend rides on on his bullit and I ride it a lot too. he won a dh race on it, hits hard landing 13 ft \drops regularly. dirtjumps big on it and it holds up amazingly. Its definetly worth getting I like it way more than my sherman

i have a pike race on my hardtail and it is sweet. crank up the travel for trails and down for the street stuff. its nice and stiff and bottoming out is no problem.

have to aggree, the Pike is an awsome for; been riding it for about 4 months now and the performance is amazing. this fork is definately NOT "typical" Rock Shox (what we all know from the past). the company HAS made a 180 and there are finally taking real steps toward improving their designs and SIMPLYFYING their forks. the motion control even though very simple works extremely well, and these guys are right bottom out resistance is in my opinion better than a sherman SPV.(i ran that fork all last year) wheter it is good enough for D.J.ing we don't know since it is only a few months old. as time goes by we will see how reliable the fork is. keep in mind that if the demand picks up so will production, and making only a few forks is way simpler than making a few thousand. that was what killed their older stuff. there wasnt enough quality control and their forks failed shortly after being bought because key peices were not properly lubricated. aside from just dumb ideas.

anyways, the new Rock Shox is nothing like we have ever seen!!! give them a chance.
