A friend of mine is thinking about getting rid of his old steel cranks and buying Saint or Middelburn rs7. Anybody knows if there are any particular advantages/disadvantages with these cranks or are they actually very similar in quality and strength ?? Presonally I have never tried them, so I am kind of lost what to suggest

Saints are very beefy and stiff, very slick installation too. I like my Saints a lot. The RS7's are a lot lighter so I hear.

Middleburns are probably lighter.

I have a question about Saint cranks: Does the outboard bearings require a longer splindle and throws out the chainline a bit or or is it a non-issue?

I'm digging on my Middleburns after using Profiles for 2 years. I too wondered about the outboard bearing/spindle effecting the chainline.

So, - do you like the middleburns better than your Profiles ? And if "yes" then why ? Also, - which box do you use with Middleburns ?

Box? Bottom bracket? I use a Race Face Signature DH. I found the Middleburns almost as stiff as the Profiles, but way way lighter. Plus you have a wide range of interchangible spiders. After a full DH season on the Middleburns, I'm pretty much sold on them.

The chainline is pretty good, I've noticed no huge difference there. The outboard bearing cranks definitely have a wider Q factor. Shimano's new front der. is designed around outboard bearings so it has some effect. In the single ring application it is doubtful you'll notice.

Shimano only has one spindle length so if you bike requires something wider than a 118mm BB it won't work.

Yeah, - sorry Brian ..I meant BB  It sounds alright like you are kind of sold on the MB cranks....are there different models here or is there only one RS7 in production...I saw somewhere that there exist an RS8 too

That's changing for '05. They'll have spindle lengths for shells that're normally mated to a 150mm spaced rear.

And I completely agree with the Saint mounting system. It can't be beat.

Downside to Saint: you'll likely need an outboard bearing specific tool. And they're a heavy as a mofo.

You're talking two considerably different kinds of cranks here.

The Middleburns are probably the lighest DH cranks available on the market at the moment. They're also plenty durable and stiff for the average user. Lifetime warranty even under competitive use, which is a HUGE plus.

The Saints on the other hand, are probably the heaviest of cranks..and we're talking almost profile-heavy here. But all that weight comes with a lot of advantages...the bearing system is one, followed by the overall stiffness and durability of the crankset.

In the end you have to be realistic and consider what you actually need...unless you're a filthy gearwhore like myself and just get the RS7's :thumb: You might want to consider the new RaceFace line as well...

It sounds like the MB are really cool cranks....I do not know if they are as stiff as Saint, but it sounds like I can expect them to hold up as well......or what ?

Brian, can you get MB hubs? If not do you know where I can get some? I'm dying for their interchangeable front hub :)

On topic: I thought the point of outboard bearings was that they could fit inside of the small ring and not affect the chainline

I'm running the saints without any issue. The q factor isn't that big actually, definatly no bigger than the cromo cranks they are replacing. And so far the bearings are perfectly smooth. Beautiful.
