Running 6 speed on a 9 speed hub

OK so I have a frame with a 73mm BB and a 150mm rear end. This = baaaddd chainline and rubbing on the guide on a 9 speed cassette at the harder gear end.

Is it at all possible to run the top 6 gears from either a road or an mtb cassette on a 9 speed hub (hope pro II)? Can I run SS kit spacers to do this? I want to run single cog spacer-6 cogs-2 cog spacer. Will this work with the limit screws?

Cheers,

Viv.

yea it should work. you'll have to readjust your limit screws. keep in mind your shifter setup, you may want to adjust it based on the new gear positions.

also, what is your setup with your cranks/chainring/chainguide? if your chainring is on the inside of the tabs on your cranks, it might help to switch it to the outside of the tabs. again, depends on your setup and your chain guide. There may be a way to work it working without resorting to dropping to a 6spd cassette.

I'm not really worried about only having 6 gears... I think it may be the only way. I'm concerned the limit screws won't be able to move it far enough before they lose adjustment. IMO 6 gears from an MTB cassette (11-34) is more than enough for DH, it gives the same range as a road cassette, just with bigger jumps. You don't need to 'fine tune' your cadence DH riding so I don't see why I need all that extra weight for no reason, I'd rather be able to get into a harder/lower gear easier.

Your limit screws should do this without a problem. If you were going to put all the space on one side, it might be a problem. If you find the limit screws aren't enough, you can probably find screw with the same threading and diameter and a longer length at home depot or lowes.

The 11 wont fit. It is too small diameter to fit over the freehub..it has to be on the far end of the freehub. You can push the others over (anything larger than 11 will work) with spacers to take up the spce.

SRAM rear ders do not allow much adjustment to the stops...if you center the 6 gears, you should be able to make it work (but your chainline will not change), but there is no way to push them all the way inboard. The stops just dont adjust that much.

I'm running 6 speed 32-12 with a broken apart 9sp LX cassette. This is on a Hadley SS hub. To get the shift ramps to line up you'll need to grind out the locating spline on the cogs and index them correctly. The X-9 did not have enough range on the limit screws and needed modification, but my new Saint Shadow works awesome.

I've got 6 speed dura-ace 11-19 and have had for ages - no problems at all except my limit screw is only long enough to limit it to 7speed (which I used to run) - so I need to be careful not to overshift. Never happens on the trail though, only ever when pootling in a carpark etc.
