Sad for America

Yup, I said it. I am sad for America. I am not sad they elected a President who appears, at the very least, to want to make a difference. I am not sad for what will hopefully be progress in the social sphere (health care, education etc). I am not sad that he empowered a few million Americans who were otherwise too apathetic to get to the polls.

What I am sad about are the small minded, knuckle dragging bigots who have spouted about the "death of america" etc since late last evening. They froth at the mouth repeating talking points and "facts" that have been debunked time and time again. These morons will do more to break america apart and create divisiveness more than Dubya ever did.

This is saddening in what could otherwise turn out to be a keystone moment in American history.

Obama may be able to create great change for the better, or he may be shoe-stringed by his own lack of experience and the old guard that surrounds him in Washington. But what he represents, whether you like it or not, is something different. A different face, a different background, a different take on policy.

Hopefully some of the frothers can see past his political affiliations or the color of his skin and simply enjoy his tax breaks that 90% of them will receive and embrace some sort of change, no matter how small it is.

and did you feel this way in '04 or '00 when people were bemoaning the death of civil rights, legalization of rape, and an up & coming theocracy?
Actually, yes. But I was more saddened by the loss of civil liberties and freedoms that was hanging over Americans like the perfect storm. Being a complete sh1tbag makes divisiveness understandable. The lowest presidental rating of all time doesn't hurt either.

That said, the far left whackjobs took it much better than the gun toting right wing nutjobs in Middle America and the south.

so what's worse than using vile hateful language to describe dubya, or making films about his assassination, or using every imaginable way to mock, slander & demean him?

for your assertion to be true, biden will succeed obama in short order.

god save the queen!

Well, there's what, 2, admittedly terrible, plots for assassination already? He wasn't even president elect yet. There was a podium ringed with bullet proof glass last night. The new limo is so overbuilt it was built on a reinforced truck body.

Bush had the lowest Presidential rating in history. Even his own party members mocked him. I'd say he deserved exactly what he got, respect is earned. There has been many successful, powerful Republican leaders who garner the electorate's respect, no matter party affiliation. Shrub wasn't one of them. His father however, was. Go figure.

Those same morons who basically don't give a fack about politics unless they are reminded every day by fox news will go back to their normal lives... in a few months they will get use to having Obama as a president. Eventually they will notice that we have not become the USSR, Obama is not an extremist. Still let them squirm and piss and moan for a while... I think its kind of funny.

I thought that was a well made film. To suggest it was a blueprint for or invitation to assassinate Bush then I think you miss the point a bit.

I'm stoked for America, even if it's only temporary. I don't give a flyin fvck what the religious zealots and the right wing nut jobs say. They are the minority. We pushed right to the brink of the New Dark Ages but it looks like we might turn it around. Reason and logic and compassion might have a place. Who knew?

I work with a early 20's girl who moved from TX to CA and asked her if she had voted and what were the lines like at her polling location. I was informed that the lines were not long but that she was furious as hell because the Dems took such control and she fears a country without checks and balances.

Heres the kicker. She said that the color of Obama's skin has nothing to do with her feelings, but she hopes he gets assasinated before he takes office.

WTF  My jaw almost hit the floor.

I'm going to have to agree, sadly, with PZ Myers: The Glass Is Half Empty

Obama is a conservative/centrist Democrat who will at best implement a small shift in American policies — he hasn't promised any strong change in Iraq, and his health care plans are an incremental improvement over the existing situation. And the opposition is shrieking "socialist!" at every suggestion, so don't expect an easy road to accomplishing even the centrist plans of President Obama…especially since he's inheriting the wreckage of 8 years of Bush misrule.

He still has to work with a self-interested, triangulating congress made up of many of the same Democrats and Republicans who have collaborated with Bush in screwing over America for the last eight years.

We're still afflicted with the curse of religiosity as a political prerequisite, and Obama has strengthened it. That is a poison that will harm us over the long term; we may have made the more rational choice in this one election, but reinforcing the potency of irrationality will come back to bite us over and over again.

Did you ask her if she had any problem with the 8 prior years of Republican rule?

I'd slap a bitch.

Well.......duh.

The point is the elecorate chose the best of two options for a change. Seriously........it's been a while. Even incremental progress trumps the assinine pandering we were potentially facing.

8 years of misrule nearly became 12 of the same religious, skewed ruthless capitalisitic, warhawk zealotry. That's still a very good thing.

Well.......I mean you've read those books right?

They're pretty funny.
I love "The Fountainhead". As a perspective on aesthetics and architecture (I did a paper comparing Frank Lloyd Wright and Howard Roark), I think it is one of the finest books I ever read.

But to behave like Roark or Gail Wynand means I trounce around people just because they aren't as smart or dynamic as I am.

Atlas Shrugged just had too many speeches.

So I can't help but to think of Dune.

House Harkonnen left Arrakis a total wreck before House Atredeis took over spice production. They also set a trap, and House Atredeis walked right into it. It was a fvcking disaster.

Let's hope that Obama remembers the tooth...

From the comments:

It’s not assassination when it is GOD’s WILL!

God is in control! And he gave us guns and made us free for a reason!

LEAD US, SARAH!

McCain lost because you need to Take A Stand. With your gun.

McCain lost because the fight between good and evil is “fast approaching.”

To the final battle between SATAN and the Legions of Jesus!

To Rapture!

God is speaking to you, deceived one, if you would only listen! WHY DO YOU HATE JESUS?
