Saint 820 brakes inconsistent bite point - any fixes or solutions yet?

I'm simply amazed how is it possible that no gov. agency (either in the US or the EU) has acted on that matter yet. It happened to me once, on my friends bike with Saint brakes. Wanted to slow down before some gnarly step down when the lever came down to the bar. Super scary stuff.

Anyway, the thing worth mentioning (I think) is that my cheapo M615 Deore servo levers have aluminum master cylinder pistons instead of plastic ones seen on more expensive models like XT/XTR/Saint :D

Also, the push rod guide (?) is a separate plastic element that can be changed or modified to manipulate the mechanical leverage, while in the more expensive models it is milled in the MC body

Like I said, I highly value your insight and didn't mean to offend you. I just know from myself that I have a hard time being 100% objective. What the Bike magazine has done is that they have recorded the forces of braking with a bike with sensors on and then tried to simulate this in the dyno test. Yes, there are many real world things removed, but you get closer to a scientific approach.
Braking force is a function of the hydraulic leverage (constant), and mechanical leverage (a curve). If you really wanted a "scientific" answer, some simple vernier measurements would give you exact data without the huge mess of external variables / inaccuracies that come with the dyno testing method.

Well I can't speak for socialism land over there in the EU but here in murka it's all about the freedom. The freedom to die or be maimed and then the freedom to not be able to sue as some jackass screams about tort reform, and then the freedom of the market to then correct the matter well after the fact. I mean shimano is a pretty small company and it's not like they get specced on a bunch of complete bikes being sold in shops. Plus this shimano design is brand new. So you gotta expect this will take a while.

We're just a free-er people here. Just like shimano brakes are free of engagement occasionally.

Sure, probably is, but according to this recall, SRAM recieved 5 reports on that matter and they recalled 7000 units. How many times have You heard of shitmano MC failure? FFS even Gwin crashed because of that few seasons back (I don't remember where was it, Leogang?), right before he switched to TRP brakes.

The way these things usually work is they probably received more like 50 reports and then verified 5.


We should do a group bitch on shimano brakes. We'd need all 20 people that still read this website though. Come on Team, whaddaya say!!??

I don't have any hope (heh) that a better brake will come of it in the future or that I get some money back or anything. I just think it would be funny.

The way these things usually work is they probably received more like 50 reports and then verified 5.
And the documents and pre-production testing where they knew it was a problem but figured that no one would really notice.

Thanks god, shimano brakes do not come as an oem spec part on almost every single bike. :rolleyes:
OT but I'm in the market for a new bike at the moment and I've got to budget for a new set fo brakes and a new dropper at the same time, because they're all specced with either Guides, Codes or Shimano brakes and nearly every bike on the market comes with a Reverb. I'd rather take my chances with the in-house (Giant, Bontranger) droppers than run a Reverb.

Bontrager drop line is pretty nice, just make sure you get one with the updated seal...

yes, they are upgrading the normal service kits with them. Probably will take a little while and it's the same part number. The latest droppers/bikes we received have come with the new seals. Considering how many bikes/droppers we've sold it's only a small number with problems but it's never wrong to make them give you the latest version....
