Im Building Up A Vp Free. Just Trying To Get Some Opinions As To What Fork To Put On It. The 888 Or A Slider Plus. Ill Be Using It For Everything Downhilling At Resorts And Riding Trails That Are Hard. I Cam E Off A V10 With A 888 And Like The Fork Alot . Just Wondering What People Think Of The Slider Compared To The 888, Thanks

V10 with an 888? Well then I guess you don't mind riding a chopper. Run a Boxxer.

You didn't say whether you're thinking about a 7" or 8" 888 but either way the slider with its spv valving will be a more versatile fork.

After running a boxxer for a while I just put an 8" 888 on my vp-free. It's fantastic for dh, drops, and other huckster-jibbfest-extremeness, but with a slacker head angle, more squish, longer wheelbase, and higher bb I lost some precision in slow, tight stuff.

I can't recall exactly but with a 7" boxxer I think my bike had about a 67.5 or 68 degree head angle and I suspect the slider would be similar (anyone have that number?). That's a little more steep than most pure dh bikes (66 to 67 is the norm I think) but still plenty slack for all but the nastiest stuff and a trade-off worth making for better turning in tight stuff and something resembling climbing ability. Plus with spv you'll be able to climb (and power the flat and rolling stuff) without excessive front end pogo.

If you truly intend to "trail ride" you'll probably be happier with a slider. If you really want a 888, to preserve some of the versatility, consider the 7" version as opposed to the 8.

I believe the Slider Plus is about 3/4" taller than the Boxxer, so if your VPP had a 68' head angle, you'll be just above 67' with the Slider. That's fairly slack for trail use, but not unreasonable for BLACK DIAMOND. :dead:

I have owned both the Slider + and now have a 7" 888.
For DH racing performance, the 888 is head and shoulders above the slider +.
It just tracks the ground way better, and feels alot smoother in its damping range.
As far as height, the Slider + is a super short fork. It is a good deal shorter than a boxxer. So, if you are gonna climb alot on it, it may be a good choice. Also, its cheaper than the 888 as well.
I don't know the angles of the VP Free well enough to recommend which fork is best with the frame, but comparing just fork to fork, I liked the 888 better.
Good luck, and for the record, I liked both forks alot compared to anything else I have owned.

888, if it's too tall, pick up some lowrider crowns.......you won't regret it. I've owned both.

The Real Question Here is Why Are You Capitalizing Each Word? Just Curious.

If Cost Is An Issue--hell, that takes too long to type, i'm going back to lower case--i'd suggest the slider+. if you have the $$$, get the 888 and the crown if it feels too tall.

If weight is an issue, search the classifieds for an old double crown SID.

heh.
