You should probably check out a card with the Intel IOP331 chipset. All our machines are SCSI RAID, so we have mostly Adaptec stuff but Areca and 3ware has some good stuff.
How about this Areca card, it supports the latest RAID6.
I assume since its for a server you definately want RAID...
Did you hear Google's study has shown there isn't a big difference between SCSI and SATA for failure rates? I wish they released more details about brands and what not.
It's a server but I'm only using it for testing purposes. I was looking for a relatively cheap large disk alternative. The card you suggested is nice but way outta my price range.
I am mainly running VMware Server and want to run multiple machines to simulate our control systems. The Dell currently has a 36G SCSI and the price for a larger one is unreal compared to SATA drives.
We usually just by a refurb. server to save money in the budget and still get decent spec.
Here is a decent looking PCI-X adaptec card for $300. If you are going PCI-X, I think most decent cards are going to be expensive. 32-bit PCI is the cheap route (ie $50 or so).
