I have piles of ancient negatives and slides from years past that I'd like to have scanned. I don't want to get tangled in purchasing and learning to use a scanner and in appropriately cleaning the slides and negatives. Of the mounted slides, the adhesive in some subset has failed, just to complicate things.

Recommendations on the best service or services to have it done?

There is a brilliant photo lab in Montreal with an antiquated website. Used them this year for exactly this and they were brilliant. Did about 100 images for me, sent me a zip file. Was very happy with the results

Assume you can find something in new england however.
