why?
a huge portion of the beneficiaries are not deserving of the privelage.

a cousin of mine, lives in colorado, wants to go to DUke. SO she found out that her dad, whose last name is dalton, is supposedly half mexican and 1/8 Indian,.

now her dad is as white as it comes. My cousin is even whiter, but on her application for the fall, she will put down "hispanic" and "native american" as her ethnicity along side of white. that would almost certainly guarantee her entrance, with such a "diverse" background.

this happens all over the country as the mostly white suburban kids suddenly discovering and "embacing" the heritage that their family hid from the rest of the society for generations(imagine proclaiming your self american indian in 1920's colorado). so what happens to the really disadvantaged kids who are much more deserving to have the pass?

Nick's saying the system is broken and deserving minorities aren't getting the benefits that was designed for them to get.

Sh*t you're right :eek: ....I'm so used to Nicklin frothing at the mouth right wing style I didn't read properly, let this be a lesson to you boys and girls. ;)

Well, I know that meaning, but I thought it's too stupid to be used as an insult so it must mean something else. I'll go with it though....whaddya reckon RM ;) Re-size it and I'll use it as an avatar Shirley. :thumb:

picture this:
johnny schmoe lives on an indian reservation. despite having an alcoholic father that left him and his mother and 2 siblings, he managed to graduate high school, and got 1300 on his SAT, even though his school had 2 rooms and no AP pr Honor classes to compete with suburban schools.

now he wants to go to duke, because he visited there, wants to go there real bad, and has the ability, but he has no "extra" courses to boost his GPA. and his SAT is not as good as someone whose parents who spent a couple of g's on tutoring.

now he is the prime candidate for affirmative action and i would say he deserves the chance. only one catch, duke, like all private schools, has a cap on minorities admitted. so his spot is taken by some white girl from colorado suburbs whose dad makes 100,000's a year, who suddenly 'discovers" her "native american' heritage.

you see a problem?

being the much hated intolerant pissed off conservative that I may be perceived as, i have a critical eye of everything, conservative or liberal, and the affirmative action is one well-meant policy that flat out does not work.

No. Because I know that there are just as many poor white kids in Tn, Ky, Ar, living in trailers who cant qualify for minority scholarships either. I see that you're saying the system is flawed by not helping the minorities that need it, but Im just saying its flawed further because it's not JUST minorities that need it. Minorities are no more deserving.

Exactly. Yes I am white. I grew up in a poor a** situation and came out of it on top with no "free" help from any program. Beleive me I asked and the help was not there.

right. and the way the system is designed, such as the one-drop policy, makes it enormously easy to abuse the system. so any time in point, a scum bag can claim an ancestral heritage of native american descent. if someone dare to question the authenticity ,we would see law-suits, cry for civl equality up the wazoo.

I would be rich by now if i had a quarter for every non-minority(i.e. white) get away with putting themselves down as native american on their application, be it school, work, grants, whatever. who is there who care enough to expose them?

I say abolish affirmative action, at least the form it exists in today.

anyway i agree. :thumb: plenty of my snobbish high-sat-score friends (me included) DIDN'T take sat prep courses btw... :think:

It's funny though, I carried a 3.8 into Evergreen. The SAT doesn't measure desire or work ethic.

that's true. altho, at least theoretically, it's supposed to measure aptitude, not achievement...

no, i didn't get beat up. :D i played baseball and wrestled, in fact, and apparently many kids were somewhat scared of me because i didn't/don't talk much. anyway, my point is that it is indeed possible to do well on the sat without taking an expensive prep course.

(disclaimer: i did take a prep course for the mcat, but that's a different matter since it's not an aptitude test and covers a huge yet obscure volume of material that is best studied for, imo, from textbooks written to cover exactly that material and nothing more.)

I came close to doing that...but the girl crying behind me kept me awake.
