Yea, sounds like every high-school I've ever heard of here in the states. Kids get in fist fights, it just sucks that this one had such drastic injuries. But really dude, I'm sure every single one of us remembers semi regular fights at school

The victim's mother, Tina Brooks, said it is an awful situation for her son, but also for the accused attacker.
...
"I don't wish him any harm of anything. This (injury) will go away in two or three weeks. He's gonna have this following him for the rest of his life, because he got expelled from school for it," [the victim] said.
you cdns just fall all over yourselves to be polite, eh?

Actually not really. I really grew up in kind of a bubble. My high school was really not like that.

The kids feared/respected the faculty and administration. (by and large....or course a few teachers were driven to tears by their students) But generally they kept us in line, and people did in fact get along. I can't think of a single fight during my time there.

I never once got beaten up.....and I was no less of a smart-ass then. So that should be an indicator.

We had a bad-ass scotsman as a Vice Principal who could out-benchpress the biggest kid in the school. And coincidentally, he went on to be the principal of the school in the story. This would never have happened on his watch.

What kind of high school did you go to??

I never go beat up either, and had a mildly smart mouth. But in an average public school with 2500+ kids, things happen

Public high school. There was only about 500 kids at my school
that's a daycare center at a high school in the states.
I went to a public high school in California that was <500 students. You could count on 1-2 fights a year. Was involved in two myself. Thing was though that they usually were broken up by other kids/friends. It was pretty rare that a fight continued to the point where administration had to break it up. Maybe that would be different today, I dunno. Sounds to me like junior needs some better friends.

My high school was rough, I guess. Weekly fights, the good ones were after school off property. I was a transient kid who had to fight the bullies everywhere we went, so it was pretty routine for me.

Not that it's very pertinent to the issue, but 2500+ is not "average" for a public HS. That is a large school, much bigger than the average.

In any case, I went to a school with about 500 kids in New Jersey. Never saw a real fight break out.

Out here in california 2500 kids in a high school is just about the average mark.

We had lots of fights, and some pretty brutal, but it was rare that bullying went this far at my backwater, redneck high school. Two guys squaring off, sure, there's usually be black eyes and bloody noses, with the occasional broken nose, cheek, or hand. No one gets in the middle of those. They're done when they're done.

But, if it was a big kid beating on a little kid it was usually a quick charlie horse, wedgie or smack in front of others for humiliation. If someone really started wailing on an unsuspecting kid that couldn't defend himself, I'd like to think even the ignorant racists in my hometown would've stepped in.

it was on the border of the ghetto and suburbia, but the school district served 3 of the largest section 8 housing projects in the county. honkies like me were the minority.
Honkie minority I can relate too, crack pipes, not so much. Tulare county was #1 for teen pregnancy and teen drop out rates in Cali (which put us pretty damn high country wide) while I was there though.

Where I went from wikipedia......"Eisenhower is a diverse school with a balanced student body of Caucasian, Hispanic and African-American students. Eisenhower serves students from the communities of Blue Island, Calumet Park, Robbins, Alsip, Merrionette Park, Posen and Garden Homes. The current enrollment is over 1,975 students."

Translation.....racial tensions are high. We fight every day. Send your kids to the Catholic school instead.

When I went to college in South Carolina I was blown away by some of the stories from friends that were from public schools in SC. One guy said at any given time there was 40-50 girls in his grade that were pregnant, in a class of about 500. In my 4 years of high school I only knew of 2 girls in my entire school (2000 students) that were pregnant.

I used that as the topic for my communications classes, Correlation between "no child left behind funding and teen pregnancy."

Derail Over.

I remember seeing the janitor at my high school wheeling a bucket of blood-stained mop water back to the utility room. He had just mopped up the hallway from a kid getting knifed in the gut.

It wasn't a shocking thing at the time. I just remember thinking I was glad to have never had a broken limb or knife wound by the end of 9th grade.

geez.. those are some horror stories.
at my school, i used to be the bully, and at most, i´d throw dead birds at guys, or sing funny songs at the fat people, besides the occasional kick in the nuts, or head crushing between hands.
