The following is the text of an notice handed out last Saturday at Rancho Cuyamaca State Park's Earth Day event (500 volunteers!)

Though the stern bureaucrat-speak sounds like just the opposite, the notice is good news. We are working on getting a map scanned and posted to www.sdmba.com, but basically, the southern half of the park will open this coming Saturday, May 1st.

After doing trail work, I think you may find being out on the trails a little disorienting. This is because you can now see for pretty long distances and see landmarks like peaks that haven't ever been visible from the trails. On the other hand, lots of other landmarks, like big old trees, are now just craters surrounded by ash.

When you do go out there, pleae make sure everybody stays on the trails. The soil is really loose and has eroded down the hillsides onto to the trails in lots of places. Even so, the southern trails are really in pretty good shape. The northern half will need a lot more work before it can reopen.

Next SDMBA trail work event May 8 on the west side of Indian Creek Trail in the Lagunas, we meet at the lower Noble Canyon parking lot at 8:00 am. Let's get it ready for when it reopens next month!

So for those of you who are not doing Gotta Thunder at Big Bear, we hope to see you out there.
