So my Surly LHT has a seat tube of 54cm ctt.

My saddle height from BB is 76.5cm

Just roughly say that my saddle takes up 2.5cm of that, that means I need 30cm of exposed seat post, yeah?

I see 35cm and 40cm posts (eg. Kalloy Laprade or Easton EA70). Which length is better and why?



Also, roughly speaking, how long should the saddle height be as a percentage of your inseam? Like crank length should be about 20% of your inseam.

I would go with the longest I could find. You can always cut it later.


It's recommmended that the post extend to at least the bottom of the TT to help mimimize the torque and with that much post sticking out, there will definitely be some.


Thomson makes a 410mm one. Though, my setback post didn't have enough adjustment to work with my B-17.

Since I'm going to have about 300mm of post showing, I think I'll err on the side of post-snapping-fear and run the 400 with 100mm inside the ST>

I've seen a few barely used Syncros posts on ebay in 27.2mm size that are 425mm long. They are nice posts and might save you a few bucks vs. a Thomson especially if you don't need a set back post.

I got a KCNC Ti post on the way. It is sub 150g, and 350mm length. It is made of scandium, with ti hardware. I'll let you know what I think when it comes in. I got it for $75 off a BF member. They go for $100+ship on eBay all day long. Good value, for a quality light post. Most posts these days are around the 200g mark. The ratio is relevant to your frame size, and the amount of bar drop you want.

It's going on my 5200 race bike. I got some syntace bars on the way too. I am about to shave 1/2 a pound for under $200. Plus I needed a longer post, and the bars should be comfy, plus I wanted to try 44cm width. Here is a link to KCNC:

It's funny how the obvious answer sometimes escapes a person.

I now have a couple bids going on an Easton and a Thomson post on ebay where the seller is five miles from me. One looks slightly used, the other looks new. I figure I could ride my bike over to the shop when I win one... exercise and save money at the same time!

I like this idea, I mean really how much weight are you going to save from 50mm of seatpost. Better to go with what you know will be stronger. Specially on Inactive weight. Let us know what SP you end up with, Oh when are we gonna see some pics of this badboy?

I don't know about the Surly but most bikes only have a few inches of post/seat tube contact so running a longer post doesn't really give you any extra strength. Then again the longer post really isn't going to hurt anything.
