Security cameras

We have lived in our current location since 1976.

We've had a few burglaries over that time. Practice of that art seems to be on the increase.

I'd like to get security camera coverage of a couple of driveway entrances and both entrances to the house. Would prefer that the cameras themselves not get stolen...

Who has waded into this quagmire? What have you learned/

Do you have wireless infrastructure to support it or will you be running cables?

My friend's dad recently had someone install a few security cameras with a video recorder. Cameras are connected directly to the recorder, not over his network which has its pluses and minuses.

Cameras at work are on our LAN, but work well.

Biggest factor is the $$$$ that you want to spend.

My friends had a graffiti problem. They bought a QSee system box from BJs $180. It came with 2 outdoor Cameras. and 2 indoor ptz domes. And related cables and dvr box. easy peasy or someshit... Internet was needed. Worked great. Cops were even able to download video to get bad guys from the interweb site without your having to doing anything. Yeah I am a snitch.

Game cameras on perimeter are easy, relatively cheap and stealthy. No live monitoring but enough for evidence purposes.

There are devices that can extend wifi range. Would have to look into cost tho
I wouldn't bother with anything that extends the range. You're going to cut the network speed in half at each hop.

Run more cat6 cables and put up another access point.

two or three big dogs living in the house are a major deterrent. In our area the only homes broken into lack canine residents.
Unfortunately, having a quiet breed offsets that somewhat, but I agree. Can't imagine sliding through a window directly into the face of a 100# ridgeback or 60# Shar Pei - no bark dogs whose breeding is to guard and whoop ass.

Came back in to ask exactly this question. Do you have a dog @johnbryanpeters? Nothing says "Fuck off" like a big dog or three.

I don't have the time for a dog, nor could a dog record license plate numbers; besides, a mountain lion would be more effective and amusing.

Similar to @JohnE, I'm not about to use the 659 for property intrusions. I used an ash stave once, but that's another story.

I'll probably start with a couple of game cameras.

Dogs, any and all kinds. We have an Aussie shepherd that can get nutty, and 4 smaller that bark at all things that move. Get them going, and they make more racket than any alarm. Takes a while for them to quiet down after getting started, so unless the neighbors are oblivious when we are gone, we have yet to have any problems.

Where's that wood I need to know now???

A large moat filled with sharks with lasers on theirs heads, might as well mount a few GoPros on them while you are at it.

Odd QU: do you think the uptick in crime is related to the uptick in heroin use? I think that may have been the case in the Bennington/Rutland areas.

Hey @johnbryanpeters,

Ever get any resolution on this front? I find myself in the sad situation of strongly considering a couple cameras for our house. Neighbors behind us have gone from simple white trash to considerably more "methy" in the last couple months. Next door neighbor to our south had it out with them couple months back, my wife had a bit of an argument with white trash wife about a week ago and then two nights ago I got into it with them about the noise/parties. I'm not particularity concerned about "safety" per se, but I am very much interested in documenting any further troubles and am frankly concerned enough about their behavior that I am reluctant to let the dog into the back yard if we are not home. Costco currently has these on sale right now: https://www.costco.com/Arlo-Pro-Smart-Home-HD-Wireless-IP-Security-Camera-3-pack.product.100340335.html

I'm also giving considerable consideration into just moving downtown. Situation is bad enough that when I talked with both my next door neighbors last night they both admitted to considering the same.
