Meyer charged through heavy insurgent gunfire on five death-defying trips in an armored Humvee to save 13 Marines and Army soldiers and another 23 Afghan troops pinned down by withering enemy fire. Meyer personally killed at least eight insurgents despite taking a shrapnel wound to one arm as he manned the gun turret of the Humvee and provided covering fire for the soldiers, according to the military.

I heard this on NPR today.....

But is it bad that he defied orders that he was expressly given?

(just asking)

And why is he getting all the attention and not the navy guy that went with him? (again...just asking)

one of the rescued soldiers expressed her gratitude orally while he was manning the gun turret of the hummer
Hummers in hummers?

There needs to be an Xzhibit "Yo dawg, we heard you like Hummers so we gave you a hummer in your Hummer so you can hum while you drive" meme poster.

Probably because he was the dude hanging outside of the armored Humvee shooting at things and he's the guy that ran out to get the bodies.

Navy guy got the Navy Cross. Second highest.

As far as disobeying orders, that seems to be the issue that held up his nomination. He made the choice, had it turned out the other way, he'd be a dumbass (and most likely dead).

And a very nitpicky point with me and the media in regards to the MOH. I hate headlines that say someone "won" the MOH. It ain;t the lottery, you don't "win" it, it usually comes at a very great loss and it's awarded, not won, given, bestowed, etc.

As someone who has BTDT I see the whole "disobeying orders" issue a little differently than most. This guy was an NCO. As such he was trained to assess the situation and act accordingly. Contrary to general public opinion, these guys are not mindless automatons.

And I am with X3pilot on the point of saying "won". I have known a MOH recipient on a personal level. It irritates them even more. Just as bad is when someone refers to it as a "congressional" Medal of Honor....no such thing.

Front Range, dude...
If you look into the history of the MoH, you will see that many awardees have disobeyed orders in the course of their heroics. Many many more have died...

Also if you go back to some of the earliest awards and read the narratives accompanying them, you will see some fairly interesting and varied deeds.

The psychology of combat and the creation of narrative afterward, especially in the context of heroism, is best discussed in James Jones "The Thin Red Line."

(The stellar book, not the awful, horrible, travesty of a movie they made of it...if you hated the movie, I suggest picking up the novel. If you liked the movie, stay away.)

In this case, I'm sure Mr. Meyer would rather have his buddies back, or at least a chance to say goodbye, than any praise from any person. Semper fi.

(Just kidding, he does sound like a true hero in every sense of the word.)

The book is a masterpiece. I read it because the movie was coming out but before I watched the movie. The movie is actually brilliant but you have to see it as a seperate entity from the book. The cinmeatography was especially good, but I'm a sucker for pretty pictures. The movie was really popular in Japan to the point of cognitive dissonance. Anyway MikeD, blow all of Joe Jones' book out of your mind and watch the film. It might firm things up..

As for MoHs, VCs, well they were well earned. Bit harder to get one these days, generally relying on how many got out alive. Need a chest to pin on.
