You refuse to acknowledge a simple fact. There's no point in arguing. Obviously defeating the military was a great victory, but no one wants to acknowledge that. They just want something to bash, so go for it. Have fun.
I care that the war rages on, and that America should never had fought it in the first place.

But I will hash over our "great victory":

We invaded over dubious claims not much different than "Remember The Maine". They had the numeric strength, but morale was so low there were frequent mass surrenders.

We had the technological advantage from air superiority to our communications. And the bottom line was that every goal from minimizing civilian and our casualities to the swiftness of our victory was achieved.

However, the "hearts and minds" battle was lost from the start. Unlike the Afghanistan invasion, many Americans (at least 49%) were against invading Iraq. There was no immediate threat to America, we declared war first, and I would argue that Saddam Hussein was following UN sanctions and inspections.

Was it a successful invasion? Absolutely, and I was grateful for it. But will I rank this with the Civil War, WW2, and the Revolutionary War?

Im not ranking it with anything particular. All Im saying was that "mission accomplished" was in regard to the US defeat of the Iraqi Regime in place. That's all.

Now, predicting the depths of this insurgency, getting the Iragi military trained, getting the government going, I AGREE it's been a gaggle-rape.

that's ok, they're going to be somewhere anyway. Not a bad idea to have a large battle tested US military presence in that area of the world
we have to be there for the long run. or all will be for nothing.

the people i know that have been there (and willingly returned)
say that's the biggest fear of the general populous, is that when bush has served his term.
some mealymouthed harry reid type will get elected and turn tail and runaway. leaving them at the mercy of every sub-human who's been brought up in a culture of hate.

we're still in korea, germany, the phillipines etc...
we have to be there for the long run.

moral obligation.

Can we coin a new term for this? Can we call it Crate and Barrel diplomacy?

But don't you think it's laughable to congratulate yourself in that case?

It's like patting yourself on the back for running the first mile of a marathon in 4 minutes.
