Holy crap is it expensive around here. Went to a bike shop to get fork oil to revive my broken boxxer. 1 bottle of spectra gold: $36.... same bottle in Seattle: $11. And they didn't have what I wanted anyway, so I left empty handed. I looked at some other stuff while I was there. dainese Safety jacket: $570

it's just retarded. I have big plans to buy a house in a year. I need to be saving my cash. Not to mention the season isn't exactly long out here either.

I should be able to get at least a couple grand (US) out of my yeti...

I'd likely hang onto my armour in case I change my mind in a couple of years, once I'm independantly wealthy....but until then...I dunno. I've hardly ridden this year, and I seem to be surviving. Looks like I am able to do without...

We'll see... Maybe I'm just suffering from the worst case of sticker shock I've ever felt.

tough call – only you know what is best Michael. I know for one that I couldn’t do without my DH bike. Even if I only rode it once every few months, I would like to know I have DH bike whenever I have the itch.

How is trail riding there Mike? Maybe you can sell the DH bike and just ride trails with your Heckler? I’m sure there are some good DJ’s there – you might want to start doing that? Get a good HT, which for the most part is cheap to maintain.

Selling your DH bike now might be a temp solution, but when you decided to get back into it, it won’t be any cheaper ;) Life is short bro – get the most out of it now while you still can.

One word...MAILORDER! Zedro buys his stuff from Go-Ride and saves a lot of $$$.

Fork oil: go to a MotoX store and buy it there. Might not be exactly spectra gold but will still be good for a boxxer (Moto International on St-Jacques St near Concordia Univ). The spectra oil you saw was in a bike shop (I'm pretty sure I know where you saw it) and was from a bike parts distributor...wayyyy too much markup.

Dainese armor?: Talk to Fraser. A friend of mine got a safety jacket off him and saved over a $100cdn.

I say since you already have a bike, it's paid off (I assume), even if you don't get as much riding in as you did in the US it's still worth it.

Come riding with Zedro and I and we can laugh at him breaking his derailleurs!

edit: One last thing. Last season, I went riding for one day and then sold my new BB7. I wasn't happy but I did survive. As soon as I found out I was living here for another year I started looking for a new bike. I guess that one season off really motivated me for the next.

Your Yeti is bought and paid for, why sell it for pennies on the dollar? It's not like the DH-9 is going to be old technology in the next few years or obsolete, so why not keep it around for a while?

You probably just need a break and do some other things for a while.

Yo Mike, lets not get crazy here!

www.denniskirk.com is the place to go, even tho their web site is down for a few more hours. You can get a bottle shipped for less than $11!

I live in Oklahoma (read FLAT) so I don't get much of a chance to ride my DH bike but I keep it for when the opportunity arrives. I ride road, XC and BMX to keep fit and skilled for when I can afford to get to the mountains. There is NO ONE here who sells DH gear so I am stuck with mailorder for parts and ridemonkey for advice. I am not trying to sway you, it makes no difference to me but I don't think I could get rid of my DH bike. Good luck with your decision. :)

where at? I used to live in lawton and it was the best setup I ever had, because www.bikeusa.com (mud sweat and gears) is in lawton, and I had an awesome relationship with the owner, as far as him letting me go through the catalogs to order what i wanted, and price breaks. It was a mail order as my LBS, and the guy was real nice to boot. Too bad it was in sucklahoma though! :D

Definitely take a break if you think it's what you need... but I wouldn't recommend selling the bike if you don't like sticker shock

Take some time off. Pretend you pulled a hamstring or something.

DH is a difficult sport, especially if you are trying to "make" it racing.

This is ESPECIALLY true when you are going to college, racing all over the Nation, having your parents tell you that you're retarded and should just focus on road/track, rarely even getting a pat on the back, sacrificing play time with friends etc etc etc...arghhh

ok, relax, take deep breaths...

the shop you went to can be fairly expensive at times, but sometimes they practically give away stuff too (like 888Rs for 1100$), it just depens on what you need. Just forget about the compulsive purchases for stuff you really dont need, KISS, and shop around for the big ticket items you need. If theres the odd part you may need, give me or chris a shout and we may have something in our bins.

I disagree about familly = give up hobbies. I think you're gonna need the outlet more than ever.....

I agree on the family bit - it's a sick bastard who gives up the things he / she loves to pursue a life of "suburban bliss" (carseats, lawn mower, tv... and nothing more) - I have 2 kids, but I look at my neighbor across the street leading a dreary, bikeless, hobby-less, child centered existence - leaving for work before dawn and returning around 8pm every evening, still in work clothes, and I'd rather put a bullet in my head than trade places. Fun and family don't have to be mutually exclusive ideas. Besides, who wants some fat bastard dad who thinks sitting around watching football is a good time?

I have two children and it is a balancing act. missing my kids activities is not really an option. They are only young once. quitting my hobbies is not an option either. It is all about the balance.

In mmike's situation, I say do what you think is best. You can always buy a new bike later, although it's gonna cost you.
cost is the reason why he's bitchin about it. So it wouldnt make much sense in that respect.

Plus, if he sells the bike, that $$$ will probably just be funelled into candleholders and new wallpaper for the wife and new home.

I'm not talking about giving up all of my hobbies. Just maybe this one. I want to get back into sailing. I desperately need new skis. And I'll be doing a lot more of that now.

As for taking time off, I have already taken all of 2004 off. And I don't seem to miss it all that much. So I'm kinda tying up a fair amount of equity in an old bike right now.

I enjoy riding DH...but I dunno....we'll see. I'm likely talkin' crazy right now and won't do anything. But right now, every time I see my bike leaning against the wall in my basement I can't help but mutter "piece o' sh*t" under my breath......

Yah. Seriously. Life is getting too expensive.

Houses suck in particular.

Don't kid yourself though. You aren't going anywhere.

Just tone it down for whaqt you actually need. Then be a buzzard and look for the deals.

sell that bike and buy that lift kid/tires for that car already...
That Liberty is like that car Christine.
But instead of possessing you to kill people, it makes you quit all you manly hobbies and makes you want to do ghey things like sailing, roller blading, and jazzercise. It also makes you say things like, no, male cheerleaders really are strong, and I really like the taste of Zima, because it leaves me feeling fresh and crisp like just after a good douche. :thumb:

Seriously Mike,
I would hang onto the bike over the winter. Most people who I know that sit out all year, can't wait to back on the DH bike come spring, and it will be alot cheaper to hang onto it now.
If come next year, you still don't have the desire for DH, then sell it then.
Good luck, and you can't ever go wrong with trailriding! Well, unless the Liberty tells you that it likes badmitton better. ;)

Hey don't be knocking sailing. I've done it my whole life. And that's a sport where I would still race. My dad races 2-3 times a week. I used to be pretty good too.....

And sailing is something I would get my kids into... I started when I was 10....

(And if you think that sailing isn't hard work, then you obviously must think that DH is just coasting down a hill too)

I guess since you've already taken this much time off you're not really "into" DH to start. So getting out shouldn't be an issue :D you're already out.

Well all I can say is...don't shoip at local bike shops. All the shops here are run by theifs, it is absolutely unbelieveable. I got the same sticker shock when i got back from Colorado.

As for armor, local shops actually mark it up 100%. Ya, keystone on a already expensive item. Smart. This explains why i am the #1 dainese bicycle armor retailer in Canada, and possibly NA at the moment. Only competition in the USA is Scoot, James and the good folks at go-ride, and we send each other customers so it works out well.

I for one sellt hat same jacket for $360, no tax and about $10 shipping. Shops are insane. (i know i know, they have to pay bills, but seriously...way to get stuck with it at 200 above MY price..and I make money off ther damn thing as well..so cmon..).

Get shock oil at moto shops, get everything else online. BTW if you still need oil gimme a call, i am heading to the west island tonight and i can bring you a bottle of rockoil.

So rather than bug yourself with money for DH, rechannel those funds to make yourself a better sailor. Ralf Lauren makes some pretty respectable colognes these days. The hilfiger scene needs you.........and you need to look good......sailor. Lemme know if you want to buy my dockers, golf clubs etc. I'm here to help.

Yesterday I bought some redline fork oil for $6 a quart at a moto shop. I dunno, maybe some bike people are scared to go into a moto shop but it's the same damn oil and way cheaper.

If you like riding but are just having sticker shock, don't sell your bike. With all the inexpensive good new stuff (hello, ironhorse) out there you'll have a tough time getting more than $2K. Then when you want to ride again, you'll need to buy another bike, get it dialed, etc. Right now you're all set up and can basically go hit it whenever you want.

I'd say keep your bike for at least another year and if you don't ride, then dump it. But be prepared to basically give it away.

But then, what would you expect the dh board to tell ya? ;)
