Seriously...how does Israel get away with this? Who do they think there are?

The USA or something?

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/01/world/middleeast/01flotilla.html?hp

The Israeli Navy attacked a flotilla carrying thousands of tons of supplies for Gaza on Monday morning, news agencies reported, killing at least 14 people and wounding at least 30.

The warships first intercepted the aid flotilla shortly before midnight on Sunday, surprising the boats in international waters, according to activists on one vessel. Israel had vowed not to let the flotilla reach the shores of Gaza, where the Islamic militant group Hamas holds sway.

If that bold part is true, that's pretty damn belligerent.

Well least they have slowed down on bombing US flagged warships these days. :)

As long as the US Government backs them no matter what, they'll keep doing anything they want.

I think as the story develops and if a few more people can get some phone footage out there showing what sounds like is some pretty bad Sh!t happening then the US will have to give an extra hard smack on the wrist. Hope so anyway.

I'm so fvcking sick of both sides over there. Palestinians poke the wasp nest repeatedly and the wasps occasionally totally overreact. If I was world dictator for a day I'd punt both sides out of there and give it to some dispossessed peoples who might actually appreciate what they have.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev accused the leaders of the flotilla of looking for a fight.

"They wanted to make a political statement. They wanted violence," according to Regev, who said Israel wanted a peaceful interception of the ships trying to break Israel's blockade of Gaza. "They are directly responsible for the violence and the deaths that occurred."

for an f'ed up story, this part made me snort:
The naval forces then “employed riot dispersal means, including live fire,”
but this thread needs some serious pulling on:
A military statement said two activists were later found with pistols they had taken from Israeli commandos.
so they carry drop weapons just like the l.a. cops, or are these inept wknd warriors simply overrun?
At a news conference on Monday in Jerusalem, Israeli deputy foreign minister, Danny Ayalon, said the flotilla’s intent was “not to transfer humanitarian things to Gaza” but to break the Israeli blockade.

“This blockade is legal,”
is it appropriate to use the term 'legal' when applying int'l action? if so, is his statement accurate? if so, do they not reserve the right to enforce what is deemed 'legal'? i think the whole 70 miles off shore may prove to be a difficult pr hurdle, but maybe israel is like libya when they declare their nat'l boundary to be 150 miles off their shores.

If you're Israeli, yes.

if you're Somali, we call it piracy.

The Israeli boarding of a ship in international waters with intent to do harm and interfere with it's stated voyage, especially of a civilian vessel, is piracy.

Defend a blockade in your territorial waters, fine. As long as you have made your intentions clear. And then, only use warships as a deterrent.

And before someone brings it up, this situation is totally different than VBSS actions in a declared area of hostilities.

This is really has nothing to do with this, but I was driving around yesterday, and I saw this truck and snapped a photo.

Who knew Israel was going to kill a bunch of activists in less than 12 hours? Apparently this truck owner.

Images from the raid show that the israeli forces started with paintball guns, and escalated to live fire only after taking heavy assaults from the crew... just saying.

Who the **** cares?

Israel doesn't own the Mediterranean sea.

Also, I'm glad to see you take the libertarian (snicker) position yet again.

Maybe they shouldn't have jumped a civilian convoy in international waters? Eyewitness reports are saying the IDF is full of sh!t re: being fired upon (IDF lose credibility? that NEVER happens!).

It'll be entertaining to see what the Turks might do. Really the only power in the ME that has the sway/military power to counter the Israelis.

I'm wondering how the US will stand if the Turks decide to play hard over this. US politicians don't want to lose that Jewish vote here but Turkey is a very significant strategic location for US air forces.

I saw that as well, consider who released the video of that. Isreal.

My thoughts on that are two fold. If you are an "elite Isreali commando" force, why are you carrying paintball guns? And real weapons? Extra weight, logistics during an assualt raid makes for extra problems. What are trying to accomplish with paintballs?

If you are an "elite Isreali commando" force, how the fvck did you let unarmed civilians toss one of you overboard?

Not to mention the large strengthening of US/Turk ties under GWB. The Turks also possess the most powerful military in the region right now...a blockade of Israel would be interesting to watch, but very unlikely.

Also: Who the fvck does the IDF think they're fooling?!

The paintball guns are for non lethal crowd control. The "paint" balls are filled with some sort of pepper powder. So it's like pepper spray you can hit someone with from 20 yrds.

Ah what a clusterfvck.... http://www.kiwipolitico.com/2010/05/israel-is-the-north-korea-of-the-middle-east-or-why-running-an-israeli-blockade-is-a-bad-idea/

I love this bit....
the “freedom flotilla” headed to Gaza with humanitarian aid and several hundred pro-Palestinian activists, including Turkish parlamentarians, a holocaust survivor and a nobel laureate.
I almost feel pity for whom ever has the job of putting Israeli Government spin on that bit....... Almost.

The follow-up Irish ship has apparently lost all comms now, and there is speculation it is being jammed by the IDF. Israel are really shooting themselves in the public opinion foot right now. It's interesting if you read the JP or other vaguely nationalist Israeli press that they can't seem to get their head around why most people think what they're doing is so bad.

Turkish PM verbally bitchslaps Israel:

"I am speaking to them in their own language. The sixth commandment says 'thou shalt not kill'. Did you not understand?" Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said in his harshest words yet since Israeli commandos raided the Mavi Marmara on Monday.

"I'll say again. I say in English 'you shall not kill'. Did you still not understand?. So I'll say to you in your own language. I say in Hebrew 'Lo Tirtzakh'," he said in a televised speech to supporters of his Islamist-leaning AK Party.

looks like one big pillow fight now:

Israel Reminds Turkey of Armenian Genocide
"You say you want an international investigation into the flotilla raid? Sure. Right after you allow an international investigation into that minor matter of Armenian genocide that you've been ducking for quite a while. As the new "standard bearer" in fighting for human rights, I'm sure you will agree that it's only fair that Turkey should undergo the same scrutiny it demands for other countries,"

"You talk about stolen land, when your entire country is stolen land, from Cyprus to Istanbul. Your regime is a racist illegitimate entity based on the oppression of the Kurds, the Armenians, the Assyrians, Iranians, and numerous others,"

"But of course we know how strongly you feel about blockades. Like the time you blockaded Armenia for Sixteen Years. Very well then. If you insist on sending vessels flying the Turkish flag to aid Hamas, perhaps Israel should begin sending tanks flying the Israeli flag to aid the PKK,"

turnabout being fair play & all: Ideas for ‘reverse flotillas’ gain steam
Although most of the recent talk regarding flotillas has revolved around ships sailing toward Gaza, at least two plans have emerged for “reverse flotillas” – from Israel toward Turkey – to highlight what organizers have labeled the Turks’ “shameless hypocrisy” in their criticisms of the Jewish state.

The most ambitious of the two plans has been devised by members of Israel’s National Student Union, who this week announced their intention to set sail toward Turkey, in an effort to bring humanitarian aid to the “oppressed people of Turkish Kurdistan” and to members of the “Turkish Armenian minority.”

So they're going to show up to bring books, school supplies, cement, wheelchairs, fishing lines, etc to the oppressed people of Turkey?

Oh wait, Turkey allows all of those things inside it's country already. It's only the Israelis keeping them from the people of Gaza.
you do know that along w/ israel, egypt has been holding gaza under siege just as well for the same time perioud, right? & just like israel, it recently has loosened its restrictions on materials entering gaza.

also, humanitarian items have always been allowed in, just not materials which could be used for fortifications.

whatever judgment you have for israel wrt the 2007-present blockade, reserve the same portion for egypt
