Good news- You can fix them by replacing the bearings.
Bad news- Pedal bearings are kinda hard to find. I spent an entire day in portland, going to 10 different places (bike shops, bearing shops, machine shops) trying to find bearings for my tiogas, and after digging around a bike shop I found that shimano clipless pedal bearings (forgot which model) fit my pedals. You might have to exert some effort to find bearings but it'll be worth it when your pedals feel like new again.

was it not an option just to have your LBS order you a set of new ones? I think I'll try that route and see what they can get me. My guess is that no one around me will have them in stock.

I'm not too sure where you live, but I picked up a set of Wellgo bearings for my Eastons at Super Go. As for making the switch, it is really easy; it's easier than chaning bearings for skateboard wheels...

I could've gone the LBS route, I was just impaitent and wanted to ride the next day. I'm sure your LBS could get you some for a decent price, OR find a local bearing shop and see if they have some in stock. Just bring your old bearings or pedals with you.
Well, it depends on how much play they have. I've ridden some pedals with some play and never had a problem. On the other hand, one of my Eastons developed a lot of play, and I decided to do one more ride with them, and the platform slipped right off of the spindle. I was really lucky, I came off of a nasty chute, and when I was going to pedal away, the pedal came off.
Lesson learned, now when my pedal gets sloppy, I rebuild them...
