how can i do this in firefox? everytime i click on a 'mailto' link embedded in a webpage, it launches microsoft outlook/word, which i don't even have configured (outlook, that is)...i checked all the Tools > Options menu selections and found nothing.

Gmail is a website, not a program, correct? I think that's your problem right there. Maybe somebody knows a script, but I don't think there's an easy way to do it.

one "solution" would be to enable pop access in gmail and then set up that account in outlook.

Doesn't Gmail have some kind of desktop application that interfaces with your Gmail account?
