it seems to be true. no snopes, and i found this and similar interviews in several places. a lot more in french and italian...

and information like this from first hand sources (a marine for 12 years) always revolts the pot....

That's a rerun...we had an audio link from him before. $tinkle posting, perhaps?

Also, it's not genocide. It's empire maintenance. We've been doing it for years.

GenPowell won't like this. Soldiers aren't supposed to be able to think for themselves. I can feel his blood getting up from here.

For further reading on these incidents check out "Generation Kill" I forget the author, but it's at Amazon.com. It's about 1st Force Recon Company and some of the first ground action in the Iraq war. Basically the issue is this: you are maintaining a roadblock and a vehicle approaches without identifying itself or its intentions. It may be a bomb or it may be a family running, but if it's me out there, I'm not going to take chances and none of these Marines did either. A lot of the people they killed are innocent and just victims of time and place. Our guys have tried a few different methods at roadblocks, firing warning shots, firing smoke grenades etc... but the basic problem remains unchanged- vehicles rush the roadblock and the troops manning the blockade have little choice but to open fire. I can't judge them for their actions, none of us should.

And you know who I blame? I blame the president of the U.S. It's not the grunt. I blame the president because he said they had weapons of mass destruction. It was a lie.
The responsibility for this situation rests on the leadership. Let's give the grunts a break- they don't like doing this any more than you like to read about it.
