Spend $795 on bartending school or not? Looking to earn some extra cash and get out of an office chair and away from a computer.

If it is something you want to do, do it. I would ask around and speak with bartenders. I have no idea if the $800 is a fair charge. I guess it depends on the instruction.....what does the class offer? How long? any details?
I have Charles Schumann's American Bar ...book. I just don't know what a lot of the requirements would be to work in a bar downtown where I want to work...and I don't want to lie...because I have no professional bartending or even serving experience. Aparently the alcohol awarenet certification is to become a requirement in the next 4 months also.Zark said:Most every bartender I know is self taught and it certainly is not a requisite at most bars.
If you want to be a bartender go to a place and ask, seriously! Why pay $800 to make money now!
Do you have a bartender guide? They are cheap and handy!
That's the thing. I'm not looking to get a bartending job at a place where they serve food. Want to get a job either at a night club, or a regular old bar. I have a local watering hole just about a block and 1/2 from my house (total hole in the wall), but according to the lady I spoke to today at the school. Des Plaines (where I live) requires the Alcohol Awareness Certification. Chicago still doesn't, but most of the surrounding towns/citys do. Chicago is supposed to start enforcing it within 4 months though. I don't have the time to be a waiter, as I already have a job. I'm just looking to do this part-time and figure out the best way to become a bartender ASAP.fonseca said:I tried to get a bartending job last Summer, with no luck. Almost none of the bartenders I talked to went to a school, and told me it was a waste of $$$. They all started by waiting tables, and eventually you get your chance to bartend. That's what I was told by managers as well in the few interviews I had. Have to start as a waiter.
The few bartending schools I looked at say they assist you in finding a job, and have ties to however many restaurants, etc. I wonder how successful that is.
This manual is probably one page. At least it should be. The page should read:Bonk said:...Secrets of Finding a Job Manual...

Just went to The Beakon Bar & Grill by my house and asked the bartender what the requirements were for a bartending job there. Looked at me funny and said, "Requirements? We don't have any requirements. We like to train them ourselves. Do you want an application?". So I filled one out. Sure it's a suburban bar full of what appeared ro be older contract workers...but while I sa there and filled out the app., I'd say he pulled in probably 15-20 in tips. Guess you've gotta start somewhere.El Jefe said:Bartending school is a waste of money. I don't know any bar manager who will hire a new "bartending school grad" right off the bat as a bartender. As a barback, you'll learn a lot more than in any class. Besides, it's more than just pouring drinks, it's learning how to communicate while you do it, how to manage your space in a busy crowd scene, how to select who gets the next drink when there is a stack up 4 people deep, how to handle an irate drunk, etc...
Bartending is great fun, and can be pretty lucrative. I have my day job and it pays all the big bills, but I bartend one night a week and it makes me enough cash to have all the toys I want (see new V10 thread ). So don't abandon the idea of being a bartender, just save that $800 and go get a job as a bar back, server, or bouncer/doorman.
Agreed! Barbacking is how I got into bartending. You learn a bunch and when you aren't running your arse off getting dishes, beer, more alcohol, etc. you are helping the bartenders make drinks and such. The money isn't as good 'backing but it's still decent. Screw that bartending school stuff. They are just making their money from people that don't know any better and think you have to have some kind of certification to pour alcohol.El Jefe said:As a barback, you'll learn a lot more than in any class.
It's like being a support type dude. The bartender doesn't have time to do dishes, stock coolers w/ beer, get new bottles of alcohol, etc. Well, at least they don't have time to do that if they are mega-busy. That's what the barback does. barback=gopherBonk said:So what exactly is a barback? Same thing as a bartending intern?
Yup. you start out as a gopher, but then as the bartender feels more comfortable with you pouring, you may get to pop open some beers, pour a couple on tap, and then start pouring the easy mixers (rum and coke, vodka tonic, etc...) After a very short while, and with some studying (replace the word study with drink) you get the hang of recipes, knowing by feel of how much of what ingredient to pour, how most drink names are clues as to what's in them, and eventually getting some style of your own.Morryjg said:It's like being a support type dude.
