I've got my Sherman in bits and having reassembled it, it has approx 10mm of play above where it should top out (as though it needs a spacer within the stanchion somewhere, or heaps of preload). Is there meant to be a spacer between the topout spring and the stanchion endcap? Or even between the topout spring and the top of the compression rod? The stanchion endcap has a metal bar banged through it at an angle (not radially, across the circle but as a chord) that would stop any round spacer fitting in there, but it also means that the topout spring doesn't sit flush in there like it would seem that it should. To my knowledge I've got everything back in there as it should be, however clearly something is not right for this to be happening. The problem is definitely within the stanchion confines as with the lowers removed, I can move the whole compression assembly up/down in the stanchion approx 10mm.
