I am planning on purchasing a large 2004 Turner Rail frame. Would anyone recommend the 2004 Manitou Sherman Breakout Plus? I know that it would make the front end steeper, but while just riding around, I could change the travel to 130 mm Rapid Travel II. Any other forks you anyone recommend?

Yeah, the Risse Big foot would be a perfect compliment to that frame as well.

But seriously, the breakout is a safe bet if you run it on the lowest travel setting. Another a bit more exotic option would be the White Bros DT 1.2. 100/120 mm travel, 4.25 lbs. Super sexy looking.

Wouldn't the Risse, White Bros, and Super Monsters make the front end, way, way steep??? It would be like riding vertically!!!

I find that as stiff as the manitou travel adjust makes the fork, its pretty useless for anything but climbing or street/dj. Both my shermans stay in long travel all the time.
:stupid:

I had the same issue with the sherman, now my Nixon, that works great on any setting because you can wind it down. It feels the same at 145, 135, 125 and 115. Its a sweet fork, I think it'd go well on a rail. you should buy it, so I can get my new wheel.

I know the White Bros Fork would be fine, but wouldn't the risse and super monster make a huge front end?? It would be way too steep.
yes, unless it was a risse roxy. I think he's just kidding. He rides a rigid fork look at his picture.

My Rail has a 130mm Z1 on it. I'm not the fastest 4x rider so I actually prefer a bike that is a bit more slack. I have a regular Cane Creek headset too, no e13 cups. I rode it yesterday and it handled fine. I have the fork set up fairly soft and slow so that it will sit down in the travel a bit as I corner.

Unless you are a pro, I think the 130mm fork is worth trying

Yep. It's 130mm or internally convertible to 100mm. They are resonably light, strong and plush.
the reason I want the Breakout Plus is because I'm mostly going to be doing drops and urban stuff. I just wan ta nice, plus, long travel fork.

You've got it backwards. The longer the fork, the more "choppered" the bike. We refer to chopper style as slack headangle. the shorter the fork, the steeper the headangle. Yes, a longer fork raises your front end, but not straight up becuase of the 67-70 degree headangle.

I had a Sherman on my Rail. 90-130mm. The sherman breakout will give you pelnty strength becuase of the 1.5" steerer tube. You probably won't bottom out the 130mm travel dropping. You have SPV, as well as manitou's stiction issues, as well as a progressive spring rate setting to work against bottoming out.

The 90mm setting will then give you killer handling for urban stuff. It wll also be very stiff to give you precise feel.

But like I said before, the 6" Plus will still work on the Rail. You just raise the BB chip to accomodate the headangle.

I use an 05 fox talas on mine. I like it a bit slacker so it feels like my DHR but I will be dropping the travel down a bit for 4X. I've never ridden the manitou breakout plus but It would probably make the bike feel like a mini-dh bike. Should be lots of fun!

yes, go with the Super Duper Monster, it's got 30" of travel, no I would go with the 5 incher up front, and when you say urban, wouldn't you want a better handling bike?
I guess I'd have to say that I'm setting up a miny DH bike.

How does it feel with the Talas on there? Does the super stiff frame make the fork feel very flexy? I get a bit of that with my XCE/Talas set-up when I rail tight berms at Kenter. Although the Talas would be a great way to make-up for the Rail's 8.5 lbs. weight, I was always afraid the structure would amplify the Talas' flex. Fox needs to make a 20mm version.

Oh wait, they did - the 36!

Oh wait - I don't have an extra $1,000 laying around!

I was just thinking: since I like the feel of the Sherman line so much, why not get the 2005 Manitou Sherman Firefly. It has the long 150 mm travel that I want, and it can adjust instantly to 110 mm!!! What do you think?? Sounds perfect to me.

I'm loving the Talas, it tracks awesome.

As for the Firefly, that sounds like a better option for your needs but don't the Manitou forks die when you run them in the lower travel settings for any amount of time??

If your gonna make a miny DH bike, i think you should definitely get a marzochi 66, that would be great because its plush for all those urban drops but not as big as a triple clamp fork. but it still has 170mm of travel, that would be sweet. Dont get a manipoo, they suck really bad. My friend hadd one and it blew up in like 2 weeks

I wasn't really paying attention but somewhere I've read that there have been issues with people running shermans in the low travel settings for long periods of time. I probably read it on here somewhere, use the search function. I wish I could tell you more but I don't own a Sherman so I didn't pay much attention.

That ounds like a reasonable compromise. As Fury siad, there have been issues with the Sherman sort travel setting breaking. If you jump with it, it can break loose, then you are stuck with the long travel until you send it to Manipoo to get repaired.

I would avoid such a long fork on the rail. I have a 5" z1 on mine and I really feel like I'm close to the limit. The frame is designed for a 4-5" fork. Putting a 7" fork with a long axle to crown dim is going to do crazy things to the handling.

My suggestion would be a Pike or a z1 FR1.
Trying to build that bike up with DH parts will leave you dissappointed. The rear end just isn't made to take bike hits. It's made to jump and rail berms.

I would only put it in the low travel setting for riding around, but for any jump or drop, I'd put it at 150 mm.
