I can't get the rear deraileur on my build-up bike to shift consistently at all.
I've tried different cable lengths, more new cables, nuthing! :nopity:
Does Avid still make the roll-a-majig?? I can't seem to find one.
I used a roll-a-majig 10 years ago and it worked like a charm, I thought I was going to get off easy again.
Or, could someone suggest a really good shifter cable set.
Thanks,

Do you have compatible Derailleur and Shifter? SRAM don't work with Shimano (for instance). And have you tried adjusting the actual derailleur? Just replacing the cables shouldn't really affect much. Maybe a little smoother, but it shouldn't make it so it doesn't work at all.

The shifters and derailleur are Shimano XT and they worked fine on the previous ride. I've tried 3 cables and I've prestretched them and adjusted them for stretch later. I've been jerking with the barrel bolt every time I stop. It shifts great when I flip it over and click thru the gears.
THe frame was brand new, I never even thought to look at the hanger, but I just checked it and it is nice and straight.

What I dont like, is the way the last cable does its loop around to the derailleur. It comes out funny looking even when I put a new piece on.
I am going to try a brand new derailleur later today and another loop of cable.

Maybe I can find a BS with a rollamajig still on the shelf.

What frame is it?

You might try a full length housing run. That would hopefully rule out whether it is getting hung in a cable stop or has a bad bend somewhere.
