Shimano Hub solid axle conversion with disc brake

In anticipation of my soon to be DOC frame, i converted my shimano hub to a bolt on axle the other day. It seems that this is the way to go, all went well until i actually tried to bolt it into the drop out. The temp frame it is on right now has veritical dropouts, when i clamp the wheel down it pulls it to one side or the other creating the disc rotor to pull to that side and rub the pads, how do you guys keep your spacing right so that it doesnt do this. ?!?!??! I wanna ride rays on sunday without a dragging rear break! :think:

Hard to tell what it could be. Any number of things. When you put the new solid axle in the hub did you put all the spacers back between the locknut & cone? If you missed a few that could change the 135 mm hub width. Just a first guess. Also measure the dropout spacing on your frame. Should be the same 135 mm. I've had frames that over time & abuse the spacing changed. It caused my brake to drag. Let us know what ya find. Merry f'n xmass. :p

Do you have washers between the nuts and the frame, you should definately put some in there. If that doesn't work, have someone sit on the bike while you torque down the nuts.

Get "track nuts", nuts with a washer built in, they usually give a bit more surface area for clamping too. When tightening, do up the left hand side first, then centre the wheel and tighten the right side whilst keeping the wheel in place. If that doesn't work, time to check spacing and alignment of everything.

The DOC has a sliding vertical dropout... you don't need a bolt-on, unless you're worried about breaking the hub axle.

Yeah i relized that, i just like the added security, i think i am going to have to check the spacing for now :rolleyes:

Cool - let us know if you get the conversion figured out. I was thinking of doing it for my QR front wheel.

I just have to take a little extra time tightening using the 1-2-1 method. Snug drive side, snug non-drive side, fully tighten drive side, then non drive side...
