So is this the new DH pedal for Shimano?

Did they do away with the old design all together?

I still LOVE my old red DH pedals.

These new ones don't look like they will offer much grip on wet days.

The new pedal is based off of the 959 pedals. I don't know if the 646,545, and 424 are to be replaced or if this is just a new top end model.

On the Shimano site, they have the 424 and 545, but no 646... just these new 647's

Well there's your answer;)
The 646's were terrible IMO. I broke several on minor and major impacts. The split body held together by plates, which were easy to destroy on a low BB DH bike.

Now if I can just keep myself from mangling the internal mechanism. I killed my past pair of 424's in a month :mumble:

I think the 646 was a bad idea, they tried to make it lightweight and in the process made it too flimsy. The 636s, though heavy, seem to last forever. The 647 is "the" high-end dh pedal now from S.

Is the cage big ehough though?

And will that resin stuff offer enough grip in the mud and rain (when I seem to need the platform the most)?

well, don't clip out and problem solved! ;) I dunno how the platform grips by itself, seems to me that it would be pretty slippery regardless of water and mud though.

got a set last spring, lighter than the 646s, better feel, and decent mud clearance. lasted 3 weeks. hit something in my race run at the US Open and ripped the cage off. luckily was clipped in and didn't need to unclip, only noticed it at the bottom. got a set of mallets and haven't looked back. clipping in isn't quite as nice, but unclipping is much easier, plus shed mud quite a bit better as well.
