I know that this mounts to the axel, but what happens if you have a flat and need to take off the wheel on the trail? Does the wheel and derailleur come off as one unit? If so then the cable must still be attached. If the derailleur can be seperated from the wheel to fix the flat, how good can the shifting alignment be after it is reassembled?

Yes, you have to take off the derailler pretty to get the wheel off.

I don't think alignment is gonna be a big deal when you put it back on, and if it is, it only takes a second to turn the barrel adjuster.

If you don't know how to adjust a derailleur with the barrel adjuster, then you need to learn, it's one of those most basic tasks.....

Oh, just what I want to do after messing with a flat, work on getting the stupid thing to shift (and i do know how to adjust the the barrel). I've been riding and working on trail bikes long enough to know that simplicity has a lot to do with reliability.

Do you? Ahh, I thought being a thru-axle, you just pull the axle out and the wheel drops out. I really should get one to play with, but at the same time, I'd rather not touch shimano.

Well, the derailleur "hanger" is the thru-axle, it screws on the end like a big derailleur-shaped nut. So when you take the axle out, the derailleur falls off cuz it's no longer attached to anything.

I don't especially love Shimano either, but when they start making 105s like that, I'll have been looooooonnnnng gone to SRAM...:)

And that's how rumours start. Speculation. The Saint attaches to the axle. The derailleur is effectively the bolt which holds it all together. If you flat then yes the derailleur will become unattached but so what. You simply bolt it all back together when the flat is fixed. Why would you need to readjust anything? It goes back on in the same place?

SRAM don't make anything comparable to it yet. If Saint is successful SRAM will probably have a heavy duty rear derailleur themselves.

From my experience riding and watching North Shore riders right here in North Vancouver, stronger rear derailleurs are needed by many riders. The SRAM plastic stuff wasn't even close to strong enough. Notice how SRAM elliminated the plastic derailleurs? I think only the X-O has some plastic left on it .

oldfart is completely correct on this one. Unless you start actually screwing around with the derailleur nothing will come out of adjustment. The cable will still be held in the same spot by the anchor bolt, the barrel adjustor won't magically turn itself while you're working on your tire, and my engineering senses tell me that the cable housing probably won't change length spontaneously.

On another note, not all the Saint stuff is totally evil, the crankset is freakin insane! It's so light for what it's supposed to be!

No, I think you have these mixed up,...

Reason # 1,567,899,756,444 refers to not being able to purchase a new XTR disc brake lever by itself without the new shifters so that you could still use rapidfire plus or sram, etc,...

You're thinking of reason # 1,567,899,756,445 ;)

I know this is a really old thread, but i am looking for someone who has the old axle mounted saint rear derailleur.

I have an 07 Gary Fisher Rig with vertical dropouts and no rear derailleur hanger. I want to make it a 1x9 and i am wondering if the old saint rear derailleur uses the derailleur hanger for anything.

Would this setup work on my Rig?

It would work great. Just set the limit screws to lock it in place and you're golden. Bombproof piece of hardware.
