Ok so long story short my extractinb bolt sheered inside the crank but I was able to get it out. When coming off (during a peddle) it sheered off a bit of metal but most of the splines are in ok. So I've got two options and not knowing much about SLX im debating whether to fix my stylo or get the SLX. Money is the big issue, but I was more wondering the advantages of runnin the slx as ive never had any expereince. I know there are a lot fo truvativ haters around but the crank has lasted my 5+ years so Im happy from what Ive gotten out of it so far. Im just wondering if the slx is lighter, stronger, or has any obvious advantages Im not thinking of.

What would Jesus do?

I think once you have damaged splines the crank is done. SLX are very good cranks. Shimano really is the benchmark for cranks and chain rings.

I would agree with that- damaged splines are no good and Shimano cranks are generally the best in terms of design, reliability and overall performance. SLX is nice stuff, but if price is a big concern maybe even Deore would be okay; at least for the price, it's a nice crankset.

Shimano makes great cranks, maybe the best in the business. What you might be able to do is pick up a set of used or OEM Shimano "M542" cranks. These are somewhere between deore and SLX. Maybe LX level, if that makes sense? Anyways they aren't as light or stiff as XT nor probably SLX, but they share all of the same level of design and construction (2 piece cranks, external BB) and were dead silent when I used them. I have used XT, Saint, and M542 cranks and they were all bombproof. My raceface diabloss, not so much...
