Hi,

Let me know if I have this right. It is my understanding that all the Shimano road bottom bracket splines are the same. And that they are the same as the XTR spline. XT/LX/Deore are different. So, could I use an XTR bb with a set of 105 cranks to make use of the XTR bb 112.5mm spindle?

Thanks!

I think so read i while back in mountain bike mag and they had they had the best choices for budget and ultimate components for XC DH and FR
they said in the ultimate XC to use the XTR cranks and use an ulteraga or dura ace not sure which instead of the XTR BB cause they were lighter but they still fit.
So yes i think they fit

I believe the only road BB thats compatible with XTR is Ultegra & DuraAce.

Ok here is the deal, 105 cranks work on an Ultegra BB, I have seen it. Ultegra and Dura-ace are the same spline as XTR. So therefore you can use XTR with 105 Cranks.

Now the question is why do you need the 112.5 spindle?

Well, I'm thinking of building up an On-One Il Pompino as a SS road/'cross bike. I found a set of Cannondale road cranks on Ebay that use a 105 bb. On their site, On-One recommends a 113mm spindle -- I think.

this is how it works

shimano has two splines

one is the XT/LX/Deore/M440 called octalink with 8 splines and 9mm spline length, thos are only compatible with ES70 (XT/LX) and ES50 (deore) bottom brackets, plus some other companies like bontrager are complying to that norm

then you have the XTR/Coda/AC/Dura-Ace/Ultegra/105 8spline/5mm standard.
this is the one you want.

there is some confusion with the XTR BB`s, see there is one, the early one called the m950 which is IMO the best BB ever, its unbeliavably light, totally adjustable for chainline and has 2 roller and 2 ball bearings, weighs 170g available in 112.5 and 116mm.
but that one got flamed because since it isnt a cartridge BB it needs to be serviced now and then, so out comes the m952 also available in those lengths but its a cartridge BB much like the road ones.

if you need longer than 116mm, then you should know there is one in both ultegra and 105 that comes in 118.5 meant for road triples.
