Hi!

I'd like to change the oil in my shiver dc...First time ever. I'd like to know what some of you have been using for oil replacement? What do you recommend? Something i could buy maybe at a MX Shop maybe?

Also, can someone explain to me the Hi Low speed adjuster on a rear shock? I was interested in the El Jefe, and it comes as an option on their model. Is it worth it?

Thanks.

Yeah, go to a MX shop definitely - you'll pay a whole lot less. Golden Spectro is good, Silkolene, Bel Ray, whatever. Try to get something without seal swellers in it, some do. The ones I mentioned don't as far as I know.

As for high/low compression. Low-speed compression attempts to lock out any low-speed inputs to the shock, while allowing it to still respond to any high-speed hits. You could, theoretically, tune it to eliminate any pedal- or rider-bounce-induced compression, while still reacting to rocks and bumps.

High speed compression has to do mostly with big, fast hits. By dialing up the high speed comp. you can prevent bottoming on really big drops. You'd use this if you wanted to race one day, and use most or all of your travel, and go do big drops the next day, where you wouldn't want to be bottoming the shock off of every drop.

Is it worth it? I dunno. Personally I don't think it's something I'd fiddle with, I tend to set-and-forget my shocks. If you're a "tweaker", then it might be worth it.

Anything from an MX shop will be better and cheaper than from a bike shop. Just make sure to get a SYNTHETIC, at the correct weight (7.5 wt or 125/150... same thing), with no seal swellers. Zoke uses Golden Spectro out of the factory.

Thicker oil (10wt) slows down your damping (compresses and rebounds slower at a given setting). Vice versa for thinner (5wt)

If you've got your rebound near max and it's still too fast, or if the fork is compressing too fast, you can adjust these with oil viscosity. However, proper spring weights are always your first step in tuning the fork. Damping is a fine-tune, esp. on compression.
