i wanted to know what travel on a shock device is and what purpose it serves. how to properly adjust my shocks for the type of riding i do and how to adjust them. also how to keep them clean and from getting demaged. any tips anything about shocks is useful.

Travel is the amount the fork moves up and down when you compress it, it helps absorb bumps so your arms don't have to... is this really something I should have to type?

There's a lot of resources out there to help you set up your shock, Google should point you in the right direction.

To make it easier to understand, well...shocks basically serves the purpose of "absorbing" shocks so that you won't have to feel all bumpy and jumpy during the ride. If you want to keep it clean then clean them regularly and if you don't want it damaged then don't do anything silly that could damage it. Plain and simple.
